Chapter 1
| 1:1In the beginning was the Word,
| 1:1and
| 1:1the Word was with God,
| 1:1and
| 1:1the Word was God.
| 1:2The same was in the beginning with God.
| 1:3All things were made by him;
| 1:3and
| 1:3without him was not any thing made that was made.
| 1:4In him was life;
| 1:4and
| 1:4the life was the light of men.
| 1:5And
| 1:5the light shineth in darkness;
| 1:5and
| 1:5the darkness comprehended it not.
| 1:6There was a man sent from God,
| 1:6whose name was John.
| 1:7The same came for a witness,
| 1:7to bear witness of the Light,
| 1:7that all men through him might believe.
| 1:8He was not that Light,
| 1:8but
| 1:8was sent to bear witness of that Light.
| 1:9That was the true Light,
| 1:9which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
| 1:10He was in the world,
| 1:10and
| 1:10the world was made by him,
| 1:10and
| 1:10the world knew him not.
| 1:11He came unto his own,
| 1:11and
| 1:11his own received him not.
| 1:12But
| 1:12as many as received him,
| 1:12to them gave he power to become the sons of God,
| 1:12even to them that believe on his name:
| 1:13Which were born,
| 1:13not of blood,
| 1:13nor
| 1:13of the will of the flesh,
| 1:13nor
| 1:13of the will of man,
| 1:13but
| 1:13of God.
| 1:14And
| 1:14the Word was made flesh,
| 1:14and
| 1:14dwelt among us,
| 1:14(and we beheld his glory,
| 1:14the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,
| 1:14) full of grace
| 1:14and
| 1:14truth.
| 1:15John bare witness of him,
| 1:15and
| 1:15cried,
| 1:15saying,
| 1:15This was he of whom I spake,
| 1:15He that cometh after me is preferred before me:
| 1:15for he was before me.
| 1:16And
| 1:16of his fulness have all we received,
| 1:16and
| 1:16grace for grace.
| 1:17For the law was given by Moses,
| 1:17but
| 1:17grace
| 1:17and
| 1:17truth came by Jesus Christ.
| 1:18No man hath seen God at any time,
| 1:18the only begotten Son,
| 1:18which is in the bosom of the Father,
| 1:18he hath declared him.
| 1:19And
| 1:19this is the record of John,
| 1:19when the Jews sent priests
| 1:19and
| 1:19Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
| 1:19Who art thou?
| 1:20And
| 1:20he confessed,
| 1:20and
| 1:20denied not;
| 1:20but
| 1:20confessed,
| 1:20I am not the Christ.
| 1:21And
| 1:21they asked him,
| 1:21What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith,
| 1:21I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered,
| 1:21No.
| 1:22Then said they unto him,
| 1:22Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
| 1:23He said,
| 1:23I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness,
| 1:23Make straight the way of the Lord,
| 1:23as said the prophet Esaias.
| 1:24And
| 1:24they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
| 1:25And
| 1:25they asked him,
| 1:25and
| 1:25said unto him,
| 1:25Why baptizest thou then,
| 1:25if thou be not that Christ,
| 1:25nor
| 1:25Elias,
| 1:25neither that prophet?
| 1:26John answered them,
| 1:26saying,
| 1:26I baptize with water:
| 1:26but
| 1:26there standeth one among you,
| 1:26whom ye know not;
| 1:27He it is,
| 1:27who coming after me is preferred before me,
| 1:27whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
| 1:28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan,
| 1:28where John was baptizing.
| 1:29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him,
| 1:29and
| 1:29saith,
| 1:29Behold the Lamb of God,
| 1:29which taketh away the sin of the world.
| 1:30This is he of whom I said,
| 1:30After me cometh a man which is preferred before me:
| 1:30for he was before me.
| 1:31And
| 1:31I knew him not:
| 1:31but
| 1:31that he should be made manifest to Israel,
| 1:31therefore am I come baptizing with water.
| 1:32And
| 1:32John bare record,
| 1:32saying,
| 1:32I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove,
| 1:32and
| 1:32it abode upon him.
| 1:33And
| 1:33I knew him not:
| 1:33but
| 1:33he that sent me to baptize with water,
| 1:33the same said unto me,
| 1:33Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending,
| 1:33and
| 1:33remaining on him,
| 1:33the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
| 1:34And
| 1:34I saw,
| 1:34and
| 1:34bare record that this is the Son of God.
| 1:35Again the next day after John stood,
| 1:35and
| 1:35two of his disciples;
| 1:36And
| 1:36looking upon Jesus as he walked,
| 1:36he saith,
| 1:36Behold the Lamb of God!
| 1:37And
| 1:37the two disciples heard him speak,
| 1:37and
| 1:37they followed Jesus.
| 1:38Then Jesus turned,
| 1:38and
| 1:38saw them following,
| 1:38and
| 1:38saith unto them,
| 1:38What seek ye? They said unto him,
| 1:38Rabbi,
| 1:38(which is to say,
| 1:38being interpreted,
| 1:38Master,
| 1:38) where dwellest thou?
| 1:39He saith unto them,
| 1:39Come
| 1:39and
| 1:39see. They came
| 1:39and
| 1:39saw where he dwelt,
| 1:39and
| 1:39abode with him that day:
| 1:39for it was about the tenth hour.
| 1:40One of the two which heard John speak,
| 1:40and
| 1:40followed him,
| 1:40was Andrew,
| 1:40Simon Peter’s brother.
| 1:41He first findeth his own brother Simon,
| 1:41and
| 1:41saith unto him,
| 1:41We have found the Messias,
| 1:41which is,
| 1:41being interpreted,
| 1:41the Christ.
| 1:42And
| 1:42he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him,
| 1:42he said,
| 1:42Thou art Simon the son of Jona:
| 1:42thou shalt be called Cephas,
| 1:42which is by interpretation,
| 1:42A stone.
| 1:43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee,
| 1:43and
| 1:43findeth Philip,
| 1:43and
| 1:43saith unto him,
| 1:43Follow me.
| 1:44Now Philip was of Bethsaida,
| 1:44the city of Andrew
| 1:44and
| 1:44Peter.
| 1:45Philip findeth Nathanael,
| 1:45and
| 1:45saith unto him,
| 1:45We have found him,
| 1:45of whom Moses in the law,
| 1:45and
| 1:45the prophets,
| 1:45did write,
| 1:45Jesus of Nazareth,
| 1:45the son of Joseph.
| 1:46And
| 1:46Nathanael said unto him,
| 1:46Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him,
| 1:46Come
| 1:46and
| 1:46see.
| 1:47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him,
| 1:47and
| 1:47saith of him,
| 1:47Behold an Israelite indeed,
| 1:47in whom is no guile!
| 1:48Nathanael saith unto him,
| 1:48Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered
| 1:48and
| 1:48said unto him,
| 1:48Before that Philip called thee,
| 1:48when thou wast under the fig tree,
| 1:48I saw thee.
| 1:49Nathanael answered
| 1:49and
| 1:49saith unto him,
| 1:49Rabbi,
| 1:49thou art the Son of God;
| 1:49thou art the King of Israel.
| 1:50Jesus answered
| 1:50and
| 1:50said unto him,
| 1:50Because I said unto thee,
| 1:50I saw thee under the fig tree,
| 1:50believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
| 1:51And
| 1:51he saith unto him,
| 1:51Verily,
| 1:51verily,
| 1:51I say unto you,
| 1:51Hereafter ye shall see heaven open,
| 1:51and
| 1:51the angels of God ascending
| 1:51and
| 1:51descending upon the Son of man.
Chapter 2
| 2:1And
| 2:1the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee;
| 2:1and
| 2:1the mother of Jesus was there:
| 2:2And
| 2:2both Jesus was called,
| 2:2and
| 2:2his disciples,
| 2:2to the marriage.
| 2:3And
| 2:3when they wanted wine,
| 2:3the mother of Jesus saith unto him,
| 2:3They have no wine.
| 2:4Jesus saith unto her,
| 2:4Woman,
| 2:4what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
| 2:5His mother saith unto the servants,
| 2:5Whatsoever he saith unto you,
| 2:5do it.
| 2:6And
| 2:6there were set there six waterpots of stone,
| 2:6after the manner of the purifying of the Jews,
| 2:6containing two
| 2:6or
| 2:6three firkins apiece.
| 2:7Jesus saith unto them,
| 2:7Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
| 2:8And
| 2:8he saith unto them,
| 2:8Draw out now,
| 2:8and
| 2:8bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
| 2:9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine,
| 2:9and
| 2:9knew not whence it was:
| 2:9(but the servants which drew the water knew;
| 2:9) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
| 2:10And
| 2:10saith unto him,
| 2:10Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine;
| 2:10and
| 2:10when men have well drunk,
| 2:10then that which is worse:
| 2:10but
| 2:10thou hast kept the good wine until now.
| 2:11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee,
| 2:11and
| 2:11manifested forth his glory;
| 2:11and
| 2:11his disciples believed on him.
| 2:12After this he went down to Capernaum,
| 2:12he,
| 2:12and
| 2:12his mother,
| 2:12and
| 2:12his brethren,
| 2:12and
| 2:12his disciples:
| 2:12and
| 2:12they continued there not many days.
| 2:13And
| 2:13the Jews’ passover was at hand,
| 2:13and
| 2:13Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
| 2:14And
| 2:14found in the temple those that sold oxen
| 2:14and
| 2:14sheep
| 2:14and
| 2:14doves,
| 2:14and
| 2:14the changers of money sitting:
| 2:15And
| 2:15when he had made a scourge of small cords,
| 2:15he drove them all out of the temple,
| 2:15and
| 2:15the sheep,
| 2:15and
| 2:15the oxen;
| 2:15and
| 2:15poured out the changers’ money,
| 2:15and
| 2:15overthrew the tables;
| 2:16And
| 2:16said unto them that sold doves,
| 2:16Take these things hence;
| 2:16make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
| 2:17And
| 2:17his disciples remembered that it was written,
| 2:17The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
| 2:18Then answered the Jews
| 2:18and
| 2:18said unto him,
| 2:18What sign shewest thou unto us,
| 2:18seeing that thou doest these things?
| 2:19Jesus answered
| 2:19and
| 2:19said unto them,
| 2:19Destroy this temple,
| 2:19and
| 2:19in three days I will raise it up.
| 2:20Then said the Jews,
| 2:20Forty
| 2:20and
| 2:20six years was this temple in building,
| 2:20and
| 2:20wilt thou rear it up in three days?
| 2:21But
| 2:21he spake of the temple of his body.
| 2:22When therefore he was risen from the dead,
| 2:22his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them;
| 2:22and
| 2:22they believed the scripture,
| 2:22and
| 2:22the word which Jesus had said.
| 2:23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover,
| 2:23in the feast day,
| 2:23many believed in his name,
| 2:23when they saw the miracles which he did.
| 2:24But
| 2:24Jesus did not commit himself unto them,
| 2:24because he knew all men,
| 2:25And
| 2:25needed not that any should testify of man:
| 2:25for he knew what was in man.
Chapter 3
| 3:1There was a man of the Pharisees,
| 3:1named Nicodemus,
| 3:1a ruler of the Jews:
| 3:2The same came to Jesus by night,
| 3:2and
| 3:2said unto him,
| 3:2Rabbi,
| 3:2we know that thou art a teacher come from God:
| 3:2for no man can do these miracles that thou doest,
| 3:2except God be with him.
| 3:3Jesus answered
| 3:3and
| 3:3said unto him,
| 3:3Verily,
| 3:3verily,
| 3:3I say unto thee,
| 3:3Except a man be born again,
| 3:3he cannot see the kingdom of God.
| 3:4Nicodemus saith unto him,
| 3:4How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb,
| 3:4and
| 3:4be born?
| 3:5Jesus answered,
| 3:5Verily,
| 3:5verily,
| 3:5I say unto thee,
| 3:5Except a man be born of water
| 3:5and
| 3:5of the Spirit,
| 3:5he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
| 3:6That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
| 3:6and
| 3:6that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
| 3:7Marvel not that I said unto thee,
| 3:7Ye must be born again.
| 3:8The wind bloweth where it listeth,
| 3:8and
| 3:8thou hearest the sound thereof,
| 3:8but
| 3:8canst not tell whence it cometh,
| 3:8and
| 3:8whither it goeth:
| 3:8so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
| 3:9Nicodemus answered
| 3:9and
| 3:9said unto him,
| 3:9How can these things be?
| 3:10Jesus answered
| 3:10and
| 3:10said unto him,
| 3:10Art thou a master of Israel,
| 3:10and
| 3:10knowest not these things?
| 3:11Verily,
| 3:11verily,
| 3:11I say unto thee,
| 3:11We speak that we do know,
| 3:11and
| 3:11testify that we have seen;
| 3:11and
| 3:11ye receive not our witness.
| 3:12If I have told you earthly things,
| 3:12and
| 3:12ye believe not,
| 3:12how shall ye believe,
| 3:12if I tell you of heavenly things?
| 3:13And
| 3:13no man hath ascended up to heaven,
| 3:13but
| 3:13he that came down from heaven,
| 3:13even the Son of man which is in heaven.
| 3:14And
| 3:14as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
| 3:14even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
| 3:15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
| 3:15but
| 3:15have eternal life.
| 3:16For God so loved the world,
| 3:16that he gave his only begotten Son,
| 3:16that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
| 3:16but
| 3:16have everlasting life.
| 3:17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
| 3:17but
| 3:17that the world through him might be saved.
| 3:18He that believeth on him is not condemned:
| 3:18but
| 3:18he that believeth not is condemned already,
| 3:18because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
| 3:19And
| 3:19this is the condemnation,
| 3:19that light is come into the world,
| 3:19and
| 3:19men loved darkness rather than light,
| 3:19because their deeds were evil.
| 3:20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light,
| 3:20neither cometh to the light,
| 3:20lest his deeds should be reproved.
| 3:21But
| 3:21he that doeth truth cometh to the light,
| 3:21that his deeds may be made manifest,
| 3:21that they are wrought in God.
| 3:22After these things came Jesus
| 3:22and
| 3:22his disciples into the land of Judaea;
| 3:22and
| 3:22there he tarried with them,
| 3:22and
| 3:22baptized.
| 3:23And
| 3:23John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim,
| 3:23because there was much water there:
| 3:23and
| 3:23they came,
| 3:23and
| 3:23were baptized.
| 3:24For John was not yet cast into prison.
| 3:25Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples
| 3:25and
| 3:25the Jews about purifying.
| 3:26And
| 3:26they came unto John,
| 3:26and
| 3:26said unto him,
| 3:26Rabbi,
| 3:26he that was with thee beyond Jordan,
| 3:26to whom thou barest witness,
| 3:26behold,
| 3:26the same baptizeth,
| 3:26and
| 3:26all men come to him.
| 3:27John answered
| 3:27and
| 3:27said,
| 3:27A man can receive nothing,
| 3:27except it be given him from heaven.
| 3:28Ye yourselves bear me witness,
| 3:28that I said,
| 3:28I am not the Christ,
| 3:28but
| 3:28that I am sent before him.
| 3:29He that hath the bride is the bridegroom:
| 3:29but
| 3:29the friend of the bridegroom,
| 3:29which standeth
| 3:29and
| 3:29heareth him,
| 3:29rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice:
| 3:29this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
| 3:30He must increase,
| 3:30but
| 3:30I must decrease.
| 3:31He that cometh from above is above all:
| 3:31he that is of the earth is earthly,
| 3:31and
| 3:31speaketh of the earth:
| 3:31he that cometh from heaven is above all.
| 3:32And
| 3:32what he hath seen
| 3:32and
| 3:32heard,
| 3:32that he testifieth;
| 3:32and
| 3:32no man receiveth his testimony.
| 3:33He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
| 3:34For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God:
| 3:34for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
| 3:35The Father loveth the Son,
| 3:35and
| 3:35hath given all things into his hand.
| 3:36He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:
| 3:36and
| 3:36he that believeth not the Son shall not see life;
| 3:36but
| 3:36the wrath of God abideth on him.
Chapter 4
| 4:1When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made
| 4:1and
| 4:1baptized more disciples than John,
| 4:2(Though Jesus himself baptized not,
| 4:2but
| 4:2his disciples,
| 4:2)
| 4:3He left Judaea,
| 4:3and
| 4:3departed again into Galilee.
| 4:4And
| 4:4he must needs go through Samaria.
| 4:5Then cometh he to a city of Samaria,
| 4:5which is called Sychar,
| 4:5near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
| 4:6Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore,
| 4:6being wearied with his journey,
| 4:6sat thus on the well:
| 4:6and
| 4:6it was about the sixth hour.
| 4:7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water:
| 4:7Jesus saith unto her,
| 4:7Give me to drink.
| 4:8(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
| 4:9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him,
| 4:9How is it that thou,
| 4:9being a Jew,
| 4:9askest drink of me,
| 4:9which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
| 4:10Jesus answered
| 4:10and
| 4:10said unto her,
| 4:10If thou knewest the gift of God,
| 4:10and
| 4:10who it is that saith to thee,
| 4:10Give me to drink;
| 4:10thou wouldest have asked of him,
| 4:10and
| 4:10he would have given thee living water.
| 4:11The woman saith unto him,
| 4:11Sir,
| 4:11thou hast nothing to draw with,
| 4:11and
| 4:11the well is deep:
| 4:11from whence then hast thou that living water?
| 4:12Art thou greater than our father Jacob,
| 4:12which gave us the well,
| 4:12and
| 4:12drank thereof himself,
| 4:12and
| 4:12his children,
| 4:12and
| 4:12his cattle?
| 4:13Jesus answered
| 4:13and
| 4:13said unto her,
| 4:13Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
| 4:14But
| 4:14whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;
| 4:14but
| 4:14the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
| 4:15The woman saith unto him,
| 4:15Sir,
| 4:15give me this water,
| 4:15that I thirst not,
| 4:15neither come hither to draw.
| 4:16Jesus saith unto her,
| 4:16Go,
| 4:16call thy husband,
| 4:16and
| 4:16come hither.
| 4:17The woman answered
| 4:17and
| 4:17said,
| 4:17I have no husband. Jesus said unto her,
| 4:17Thou hast well said,
| 4:17I have no husband:
| 4:18For thou hast had five husbands;
| 4:18and
| 4:18he whom thou now hast is not thy husband:
| 4:18in that saidst thou truly.
| 4:19The woman saith unto him,
| 4:19Sir,
| 4:19I perceive that thou art a prophet.
| 4:20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain;
| 4:20and
| 4:20ye say,
| 4:20that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
| 4:21Jesus saith unto her,
| 4:21Woman,
| 4:21believe me,
| 4:21the hour cometh,
| 4:21when ye shall neither in this mountain,
| 4:21nor
| 4:21yet at Jerusalem,
| 4:21worship the Father.
| 4:22Ye worship ye know not what:
| 4:22we know what we worship:
| 4:22for salvation is of the Jews.
| 4:23But
| 4:23the hour cometh,
| 4:23and
| 4:23now is,
| 4:23when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit
| 4:23and
| 4:23in truth:
| 4:23for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
| 4:24God is a Spirit:
| 4:24and
| 4:24they that worship him must worship him in spirit
| 4:24and
| 4:24in truth.
| 4:25The woman saith unto him,
| 4:25I know that Messias cometh,
| 4:25which is called Christ:
| 4:25when he is come,
| 4:25he will tell us all things.
| 4:26Jesus saith unto her,
| 4:26I that speak unto thee am he.
| 4:27And
| 4:27upon this came his disciples,
| 4:27and
| 4:27marvelled that he talked with the woman:
| 4:27yet no man said,
| 4:27What seekest thou?
| 4:27or
| 4:27,
| 4:27Why talkest thou with her?
| 4:28The woman then left her waterpot,
| 4:28and
| 4:28went her way into the city,
| 4:28and
| 4:28saith to the men,
| 4:29Come,
| 4:29see a man,
| 4:29which told me all things that ever I did:
| 4:29is not this the Christ?
| 4:30Then they went out of the city,
| 4:30and
| 4:30came unto him.
| 4:31In the mean while his disciples prayed him,
| 4:31saying,
| 4:31Master,
| 4:31eat.
| 4:32But
| 4:32he said unto them,
| 4:32I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
| 4:33Therefore said the disciples one to another,
| 4:33Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
| 4:34Jesus saith unto them,
| 4:34My meat is to do the will of him that sent me,
| 4:34and
| 4:34to finish his work.
| 4:35Say not ye,
| 4:35There are yet four months,
| 4:35and
| 4:35then cometh harvest? behold,
| 4:35I say unto you,
| 4:35Lift up your eyes,
| 4:35and
| 4:35look on the fields;
| 4:35for they are white already to harvest.
| 4:36And
| 4:36he that reapeth receiveth wages,
| 4:36and
| 4:36gathereth fruit unto life eternal:
| 4:36that both he that soweth
| 4:36and
| 4:36he that reapeth may rejoice together.
| 4:37And
| 4:37herein is that saying true,
| 4:37One soweth,
| 4:37and
| 4:37another reapeth.
| 4:38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour:
| 4:38other men laboured,
| 4:38and
| 4:38ye are entered into their labours.
| 4:39And
| 4:39many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman,
| 4:39which testified,
| 4:39He told me all that ever I did.
| 4:40So when the Samaritans were come unto him,
| 4:40they besought him that he would tarry with them:
| 4:40and
| 4:40he abode there two days.
| 4:41And
| 4:41many more believed because of his own word;
| 4:42And
| 4:42said unto the woman,
| 4:42Now we believe,
| 4:42not because of thy saying:
| 4:42for we have heard him ourselves,
| 4:42and
| 4:42know that this is indeed the Christ,
| 4:42the Saviour of the world.
| 4:43Now after two days he departed thence,
| 4:43and
| 4:43went into Galilee.
| 4:44For Jesus himself testified,
| 4:44that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
| 4:45Then when he was come into Galilee,
| 4:45the Galilaeans received him,
| 4:45having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast:
| 4:45for they also went unto the feast.
| 4:46So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee,
| 4:46where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman,
| 4:46whose son was sick at Capernaum.
| 4:47When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee,
| 4:47he went unto him,
| 4:47and
| 4:47besought him that he would come down,
| 4:47and
| 4:47heal his son:
| 4:47for he was at the point of death.
| 4:48Then said Jesus unto him,
| 4:48Except ye see signs
| 4:48and
| 4:48wonders,
| 4:48ye will not believe.
| 4:49The nobleman saith unto him,
| 4:49Sir,
| 4:49come down ere my child die.
| 4:50Jesus saith unto him,
| 4:50Go thy way;
| 4:50thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him,
| 4:50and
| 4:50he went his way.
| 4:51And
| 4:51as he was now going down,
| 4:51his servants met him,
| 4:51and
| 4:51told him,
| 4:51saying,
| 4:51Thy son liveth.
| 4:52Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him,
| 4:52Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
| 4:53So the father knew that it was at the same hour,
| 4:53in the which Jesus said unto him,
| 4:53Thy son liveth:
| 4:53and
| 4:53himself believed,
| 4:53and
| 4:53his whole house.
| 4:54This is again the second miracle that Jesus did,
| 4:54when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
Chapter 5
| 5:1After this there was a feast of the Jews;
| 5:1and
| 5:1Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
| 5:2Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool,
| 5:2which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda,
| 5:2having five porches.
| 5:3In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk,
| 5:3of blind,
| 5:3halt,
| 5:3withered,
| 5:3waiting for the moving of the water.
| 5:4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool,
| 5:4and
| 5:4troubled the water:
| 5:4whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
| 5:5And
| 5:5a certain man was there,
| 5:5which had an infirmity thirty
| 5:5and
| 5:5eight years.
| 5:6When Jesus saw him lie,
| 5:6and
| 5:6knew that he had been now a long time in that case,
| 5:6he saith unto him,
| 5:6Wilt thou be made whole?
| 5:7The impotent man answered him,
| 5:7Sir,
| 5:7I have no man,
| 5:7when the water is troubled,
| 5:7to put me into the pool:
| 5:7but
| 5:7while I am coming,
| 5:7another steppeth down before me.
| 5:8Jesus saith unto him,
| 5:8Rise,
| 5:8take up thy bed,
| 5:8and
| 5:8walk.
| 5:9And
| 5:9immediately the man was made whole,
| 5:9and
| 5:9took up his bed,
| 5:9and
| 5:9walked:
| 5:9and
| 5:9on the same day was the sabbath.
| 5:10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured,
| 5:10It is the sabbath day:
| 5:10it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
| 5:11He answered them,
| 5:11He that made me whole,
| 5:11the same said unto me,
| 5:11Take up thy bed,
| 5:11and
| 5:11walk.
| 5:12Then asked they him,
| 5:12What man is that which said unto thee,
| 5:12Take up thy bed,
| 5:12and
| 5:12walk?
| 5:13And
| 5:13he that was healed wist not who it was:
| 5:13for Jesus had conveyed himself away,
| 5:13a multitude being in that place.
| 5:14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple,
| 5:14and
| 5:14said unto him,
| 5:14Behold,
| 5:14thou art made whole:
| 5:14sin no more,
| 5:14lest a worse thing come unto thee.
| 5:15The man departed,
| 5:15and
| 5:15told the Jews that it was Jesus,
| 5:15which had made him whole.
| 5:16And
| 5:16therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus,
| 5:16and
| 5:16sought to slay him,
| 5:16because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
| 5:17But
| 5:17Jesus answered them,
| 5:17My Father worketh hitherto,
| 5:17and
| 5:17I work.
| 5:18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him,
| 5:18because he not only had broken the sabbath,
| 5:18but
| 5:18said also that God was his Father,
| 5:18making himself equal with God.
| 5:19Then answered Jesus
| 5:19and
| 5:19said unto them,
| 5:19Verily,
| 5:19verily,
| 5:19I say unto you,
| 5:19The Son can do nothing of himself,
| 5:19but
| 5:19what he seeth the Father do:
| 5:19for what things soever he doeth,
| 5:19these also doeth the Son likewise.
| 5:20For the Father loveth the Son,
| 5:20and
| 5:20sheweth him all things that himself doeth:
| 5:20and
| 5:20he will shew him greater works than these,
| 5:20that ye may marvel.
| 5:21For as the Father raiseth up the dead,
| 5:21and
| 5:21quickeneth them;
| 5:21even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
| 5:22For the Father judgeth no man,
| 5:22but
| 5:22hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
| 5:23That all men should honour the Son,
| 5:23even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
| 5:24Verily,
| 5:24verily,
| 5:24I say unto you,
| 5:24He that heareth my word,
| 5:24and
| 5:24believeth on him that sent me,
| 5:24hath everlasting life,
| 5:24and
| 5:24shall not come into condemnation;
| 5:24but
| 5:24is passed from death unto life.
| 5:25Verily,
| 5:25verily,
| 5:25I say unto you,
| 5:25The hour is coming,
| 5:25and
| 5:25now is,
| 5:25when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God:
| 5:25and
| 5:25they that hear shall live.
| 5:26For as the Father hath life in himself;
| 5:26so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
| 5:27And
| 5:27hath given him authority to execute judgment also,
| 5:27because he is the Son of man.
| 5:28Marvel not at this:
| 5:28for the hour is coming,
| 5:28in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
| 5:29And
| 5:29shall come forth;
| 5:29they that have done good,
| 5:29unto the resurrection of life;
| 5:29and
| 5:29they that have done evil,
| 5:29unto the resurrection of damnation.
| 5:30I can of mine own self do nothing:
| 5:30as I hear,
| 5:30I judge:
| 5:30and
| 5:30my judgment is just;
| 5:30because I seek not mine own will,
| 5:30but
| 5:30the will of the Father which hath sent me.
| 5:31If I bear witness of myself,
| 5:31my witness is not true.
| 5:32There is another that beareth witness of me;
| 5:32and
| 5:32I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
| 5:33Ye sent unto John,
| 5:33and
| 5:33he bare witness unto the truth.
| 5:34But
| 5:34I receive not testimony from man:
| 5:34but
| 5:34these things I say,
| 5:34that ye might be saved.
| 5:35He was a burning
| 5:35and
| 5:35a shining light:
| 5:35and
| 5:35ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
| 5:36But
| 5:36I have greater witness than that of John:
| 5:36for the works which the Father hath given me to finish,
| 5:36the same works that I do,
| 5:36bear witness of me,
| 5:36that the Father hath sent me.
| 5:37And
| 5:37the Father himself,
| 5:37which hath sent me,
| 5:37hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time,
| 5:37nor
| 5:37seen his shape.
| 5:38And
| 5:38ye have not his word abiding in you:
| 5:38for whom he hath sent,
| 5:38him ye believe not.
| 5:39Search the scriptures;
| 5:39for in them ye think ye have eternal life:
| 5:39and
| 5:39they are they which testify of me.
| 5:40And
| 5:40ye will not come to me,
| 5:40that ye might have life.
| 5:41I receive not honour from men.
| 5:42But
| 5:42I know you,
| 5:42that ye have not the love of God in you.
| 5:43I am come in my Father’s name,
| 5:43and
| 5:43ye receive me not:
| 5:43if another shall come in his own name,
| 5:43him ye will receive.
| 5:44How can ye believe,
| 5:44which receive honour one of another,
| 5:44and
| 5:44seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
| 5:45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father:
| 5:45there is one that accuseth you,
| 5:45even Moses,
| 5:45in whom ye trust.
| 5:46For had ye believed Moses,
| 5:46ye would have believed me;
| 5:46for he wrote of me.
| 5:47But
| 5:47if ye believe not his writings,
| 5:47how shall ye believe my words?
Chapter 6
| 6:1After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee,
| 6:1which is the sea of Tiberias.
| 6:2And
| 6:2a great multitude followed him,
| 6:2because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
| 6:3And
| 6:3Jesus went up into a mountain,
| 6:3and
| 6:3there he sat with his disciples.
| 6:4And
| 6:4the passover,
| 6:4a feast of the Jews,
| 6:4was nigh.
| 6:5When Jesus then lifted up his eyes,
| 6:5and
| 6:5saw a great company come unto him,
| 6:5he saith unto Philip,
| 6:5Whence shall we buy bread,
| 6:5that these may eat?
| 6:6And
| 6:6this he said to prove him:
| 6:6for he himself knew what he would do.
| 6:7Philip answered him,
| 6:7Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them,
| 6:7that every one of them may take a little.
| 6:8One of his disciples,
| 6:8Andrew,
| 6:8Simon Peter’s brother,
| 6:8saith unto him,
| 6:9There is a lad here,
| 6:9which hath five barley loaves,
| 6:9and
| 6:9two small fishes:
| 6:9but
| 6:9what are they among so many?
| 6:10And
| 6:10Jesus said,
| 6:10Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down,
| 6:10in number about five thousand.
| 6:11And
| 6:11Jesus took the loaves;
| 6:11and
| 6:11when he had given thanks,
| 6:11he distributed to the disciples,
| 6:11and
| 6:11the disciples to them that were set down;
| 6:11and
| 6:11likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
| 6:12When they were filled,
| 6:12he said unto his disciples,
| 6:12Gather up the fragments that remain,
| 6:12that nothing be lost.
| 6:13Therefore they gathered them together,
| 6:13and
| 6:13filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves,
| 6:13which remained over
| 6:13and
| 6:13above unto them that had eaten.
| 6:14Then those men,
| 6:14when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did,
| 6:14said,
| 6:14This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
| 6:15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come
| 6:15and
| 6:15take him by force,
| 6:15to make him a king,
| 6:15he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
| 6:16And
| 6:16when even was now come,
| 6:16his disciples went down unto the sea,
| 6:17And
| 6:17entered into a ship,
| 6:17and
| 6:17went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark,
| 6:17and
| 6:17Jesus was not come to them.
| 6:18And
| 6:18the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
| 6:19So when they had rowed about five
| 6:19and
| 6:19twenty
| 6:19or
| 6:19thirty furlongs,
| 6:19they see Jesus walking on the sea,
| 6:19and
| 6:19drawing nigh unto the ship:
| 6:19and
| 6:19they were afraid.
| 6:20But
| 6:20he saith unto them,
| 6:20It is I;
| 6:20be not afraid.
| 6:21Then they willingly received him into the ship:
| 6:21and
| 6:21immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
| 6:22The day following,
| 6:22when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there,
| 6:22save that one whereinto his disciples were entered,
| 6:22and
| 6:22that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat,
| 6:22but
| 6:22that his disciples were gone away alone;
| 6:23(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread,
| 6:23after that the Lord had given thanks:
| 6:23)
| 6:24When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there,
| 6:24neither his disciples,
| 6:24they also took shipping,
| 6:24and
| 6:24came to Capernaum,
| 6:24seeking for Jesus.
| 6:25And
| 6:25when they had found him on the other side of the sea,
| 6:25they said unto him,
| 6:25Rabbi,
| 6:25when camest thou hither?
| 6:26Jesus answered them
| 6:26and
| 6:26said,
| 6:26Verily,
| 6:26verily,
| 6:26I say unto you,
| 6:26Ye seek me,
| 6:26not because ye saw the miracles,
| 6:26but
| 6:26because ye did eat of the loaves,
| 6:26and
| 6:26were filled.
| 6:27Labour not for the meat which perisheth,
| 6:27but
| 6:27for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
| 6:27which the Son of man shall give unto you:
| 6:27for him hath God the Father sealed.
| 6:28Then said they unto him,
| 6:28What shall we do,
| 6:28that we might work the works of God?
| 6:29Jesus answered
| 6:29and
| 6:29said unto them,
| 6:29This is the work of God,
| 6:29that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
| 6:30They said therefore unto him,
| 6:30What sign shewest thou then,
| 6:30that we may see,
| 6:30and
| 6:30believe thee? what dost thou work?
| 6:31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert;
| 6:31as it is written,
| 6:31He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
| 6:32Then Jesus said unto them,
| 6:32Verily,
| 6:32verily,
| 6:32I say unto you,
| 6:32Moses gave you not that bread from heaven;
| 6:32but
| 6:32my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
| 6:33For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven,
| 6:33and
| 6:33giveth life unto the world.
| 6:34Then said they unto him,
| 6:34Lord,
| 6:34evermore give us this bread.
| 6:35And
| 6:35Jesus said unto them,
| 6:35I am the bread of life:
| 6:35he that cometh to me shall never hunger;
| 6:35and
| 6:35he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
| 6:36But
| 6:36I said unto you,
| 6:36That ye also have seen me,
| 6:36and
| 6:36believe not.
| 6:37All that the Father giveth me shall come to me;
| 6:37and
| 6:37him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
| 6:38For I came down from heaven,
| 6:38not to do mine own will,
| 6:38but
| 6:38the will of him that sent me.
| 6:39And
| 6:39this is the Father’s will which hath sent me,
| 6:39that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing,
| 6:39but
| 6:39should raise it up again at the last day.
| 6:40And
| 6:40this is the will of him that sent me,
| 6:40that every one which seeth the Son,
| 6:40and
| 6:40believeth on him,
| 6:40may have everlasting life:
| 6:40and
| 6:40I will raise him up at the last day.
| 6:41The Jews then murmured at him,
| 6:41because he said,
| 6:41I am the bread which came down from heaven.
| 6:42And
| 6:42they said,
| 6:42Is not this Jesus,
| 6:42the son of Joseph,
| 6:42whose father
| 6:42and
| 6:42mother we know? how is it then that he saith,
| 6:42I came down from heaven?
| 6:43Jesus therefore answered
| 6:43and
| 6:43said unto them,
| 6:43Murmur not among yourselves.
| 6:44No man can come to me,
| 6:44except the Father which hath sent me draw him:
| 6:44and
| 6:44I will raise him up at the last day.
| 6:45It is written in the prophets,
| 6:45And
| 6:45they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard,
| 6:45and
| 6:45hath learned of the Father,
| 6:45cometh unto me.
| 6:46Not that any man hath seen the Father,
| 6:46save he which is of God,
| 6:46he hath seen the Father.
| 6:47Verily,
| 6:47verily,
| 6:47I say unto you,
| 6:47He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
| 6:48I am that bread of life.
| 6:49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness,
| 6:49and
| 6:49are dead.
| 6:50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven,
| 6:50that a man may eat thereof,
| 6:50and
| 6:50not die.
| 6:51I am the living bread which came down from heaven:
| 6:51if any man eat of this bread,
| 6:51he shall live for ever:
| 6:51and
| 6:51the bread that I will give is my flesh,
| 6:51which I will give for the life of the world.
| 6:52The Jews therefore strove among themselves,
| 6:52saying,
| 6:52How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
| 6:53Then Jesus said unto them,
| 6:53Verily,
| 6:53verily,
| 6:53I say unto you,
| 6:53Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
| 6:53and
| 6:53drink his blood,
| 6:53ye have no life in you.
| 6:54Whoso eateth my flesh,
| 6:54and
| 6:54drinketh my blood,
| 6:54hath eternal life;
| 6:54and
| 6:54I will raise him up at the last day.
| 6:55For my flesh is meat indeed,
| 6:55and
| 6:55my blood is drink indeed.
| 6:56He that eateth my flesh,
| 6:56and
| 6:56drinketh my blood,
| 6:56dwelleth in me,
| 6:56and
| 6:56I in him.
| 6:57As the living Father hath sent me,
| 6:57and
| 6:57I live by the Father:
| 6:57so he that eateth me,
| 6:57even he shall live by me.
| 6:58This is that bread which came down from heaven:
| 6:58not as your fathers did eat manna,
| 6:58and
| 6:58are dead:
| 6:58he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
| 6:59These things said he in the synagogue,
| 6:59as he taught in Capernaum.
| 6:60Many therefore of his disciples,
| 6:60when they had heard this,
| 6:60said,
| 6:60This is an hard saying;
| 6:60who can hear it?
| 6:61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it,
| 6:61he said unto them,
| 6:61Doth this offend you?
| 6:62What
| 6:62and
| 6:62if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
| 6:63It is the spirit that quickeneth;
| 6:63the flesh profiteth nothing:
| 6:63the words that I speak unto you,
| 6:63they are spirit,
| 6:63and
| 6:63they are life.
| 6:64But
| 6:64there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not,
| 6:64and
| 6:64who should betray him.
| 6:65And
| 6:65he said,
| 6:65Therefore said I unto you,
| 6:65that no man can come unto me,
| 6:65except it were given unto him of my Father.
| 6:66From that time many of his disciples went back,
| 6:66and
| 6:66walked no more with him.
| 6:67Then said Jesus unto the twelve,
| 6:67Will ye also go away?
| 6:68Then Simon Peter answered him,
| 6:68Lord,
| 6:68to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
| 6:69And
| 6:69we believe
| 6:69and
| 6:69are sure that thou art that Christ,
| 6:69the Son of the living God.
| 6:70Jesus answered them,
| 6:70Have not I chosen you twelve,
| 6:70and
| 6:70one of you is a devil?
| 6:71He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon:
| 6:71for he it was that should betray him,
| 6:71being one of the twelve.
Chapter 7
| 7:1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee:
| 7:1for he would not walk in Jewry,
| 7:1because the Jews sought to kill him.
| 7:2Now the Jew’s feast of tabernacles was at hand.
| 7:3His brethren therefore said unto him,
| 7:3Depart hence,
| 7:3and
| 7:3go into Judaea,
| 7:3that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
| 7:4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret,
| 7:4and
| 7:4he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things,
| 7:4shew thyself to the world.
| 7:5For neither did his brethren believe in him.
| 7:6Then Jesus said unto them,
| 7:6My time is not yet come:
| 7:6but
| 7:6your time is alway ready.
| 7:7The world cannot hate you;
| 7:7but
| 7:7me it hateth,
| 7:7because I testify of it,
| 7:7that the works thereof are evil.
| 7:8Go ye up unto this feast:
| 7:8I go not up yet unto this feast:
| 7:8for my time is not yet full come.
| 7:9When he had said these words unto them,
| 7:9he abode still in Galilee.
| 7:10But
| 7:10when his brethren were gone up,
| 7:10then went he also up unto the feast,
| 7:10not openly,
| 7:10but
| 7:10as it were in secret.
| 7:11Then the Jews sought him at the feast,
| 7:11and
| 7:11said,
| 7:11Where is he?
| 7:12And
| 7:12there was much murmuring among the people concerning him:
| 7:12for some said,
| 7:12He is a good man:
| 7:12others said,
| 7:12Nay;
| 7:12but
| 7:12he deceiveth the people.
| 7:13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
| 7:14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple,
| 7:14and
| 7:14taught.
| 7:15And
| 7:15the Jews marvelled,
| 7:15saying,
| 7:15How knoweth this man letters,
| 7:15having never learned?
| 7:16Jesus answered them,
| 7:16and
| 7:16said,
| 7:16My doctrine is not mine,
| 7:16but
| 7:16his that sent me.
| 7:17If any man will do his will,
| 7:17he shall know of the doctrine,
| 7:17whether it be of God,
| 7:17or
| 7:17whether I speak of myself.
| 7:18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory:
| 7:18but
| 7:18he that seeketh his glory that sent him,
| 7:18the same is true,
| 7:18and
| 7:18no unrighteousness is in him.
| 7:19Did not Moses give you the law,
| 7:19and
| 7:19yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
| 7:20The people answered
| 7:20and
| 7:20said,
| 7:20Thou hast a devil:
| 7:20who goeth about to kill thee?
| 7:21Jesus answered
| 7:21and
| 7:21said unto them,
| 7:21I have done one work,
| 7:21and
| 7:21ye all marvel.
| 7:22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision;
| 7:22(not because it is of Moses,
| 7:22but
| 7:22of the fathers;
| 7:22)
| 7:22and
| 7:22ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
| 7:23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision,
| 7:23that the law of Moses should not be broken;
| 7:23are ye angry at me,
| 7:23because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
| 7:24Judge not according to the appearance,
| 7:24but
| 7:24judge righteous judgment.
| 7:25Then said some of them of Jerusalem,
| 7:25Is not this he,
| 7:25whom they seek to kill?
| 7:26But
| 7:26,
| 7:26lo,
| 7:26he speaketh boldly,
| 7:26and
| 7:26they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
| 7:27Howbeit we know this man whence he is:
| 7:27but
| 7:27when Christ cometh,
| 7:27no man knoweth whence he is.
| 7:28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught,
| 7:28saying,
| 7:28Ye both know me,
| 7:28and
| 7:28ye know whence I am:
| 7:28and
| 7:28I am not come of myself,
| 7:28but
| 7:28he that sent me is true,
| 7:28whom ye know not.
| 7:29But
| 7:29I know him:
| 7:29for I am from him,
| 7:29and
| 7:29he hath sent me.
| 7:30Then they sought to take him:
| 7:30but
| 7:30no man laid hands on him,
| 7:30because his hour was not yet come.
| 7:31And
| 7:31many of the people believed on him,
| 7:31and
| 7:31said,
| 7:31When Christ cometh,
| 7:31will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
| 7:32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him;
| 7:32and
| 7:32the Pharisees
| 7:32and
| 7:32the chief priests sent officers to take him.
| 7:33Then said Jesus unto them,
| 7:33Yet a little while am I with you,
| 7:33and
| 7:33then I go unto him that sent me.
| 7:34Ye shall seek me,
| 7:34and
| 7:34shall not find me:
| 7:34and
| 7:34where I am,
| 7:34thither ye cannot come.
| 7:35Then said the Jews among themselves,
| 7:35Whither will he go,
| 7:35that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles,
| 7:35and
| 7:35teach the Gentiles?
| 7:36What manner of saying is this that he said,
| 7:36Ye shall seek me,
| 7:36and
| 7:36shall not find me:
| 7:36and
| 7:36where I am,
| 7:36thither ye cannot come?
| 7:37In the last day,
| 7:37that great day of the feast,
| 7:37Jesus stood
| 7:37and
| 7:37cried,
| 7:37saying,
| 7:37If any man thirst,
| 7:37let him come unto me,
| 7:37and
| 7:37drink.
| 7:38He that believeth on me,
| 7:38as the scripture hath said,
| 7:38out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
| 7:39(But this spake he of the Spirit,
| 7:39which they that believe on him should receive:
| 7:39for the Holy Ghost was not yet given;
| 7:39because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
| 7:40Many of the people therefore,
| 7:40when they heard this saying,
| 7:40said,
| 7:40Of a truth this is the Prophet.
| 7:41Others said,
| 7:41This is the Christ. But some said,
| 7:41Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
| 7:42Hath not the scripture said,
| 7:42That Christ cometh of the seed of David,
| 7:42and
| 7:42out of the town of Bethlehem,
| 7:42where David was?
| 7:43So there was a division among the people because of him.
| 7:44And
| 7:44some of them would have taken him;
| 7:44but
| 7:44no man laid hands on him.
| 7:45Then came the officers to the chief priests
| 7:45and
| 7:45Pharisees;
| 7:45and
| 7:45they said unto them,
| 7:45Why have ye not brought him?
| 7:46The officers answered,
| 7:46Never man spake like this man.
| 7:47Then answered them the Pharisees,
| 7:47Are ye also deceived?
| 7:48Have any of the rulers
| 7:48or
| 7:48of the Pharisees believed on him?
| 7:49But
| 7:49this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
| 7:50Nicodemus saith unto them,
| 7:50(he that came to Jesus by night,
| 7:50being one of them,
| 7:50)
| 7:51Doth our law judge any man,
| 7:51before it hear him,
| 7:51and
| 7:51know what he doeth?
| 7:52They answered
| 7:52and
| 7:52said unto him,
| 7:52Art thou also of Galilee? Search,
| 7:52and
| 7:52look:
| 7:52for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
| 7:53And
| 7:53every man went unto his own house.
Chapter 8
| 8:1Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
| 8:2And
| 8:2early in the morning he came again into the temple,
| 8:2and
| 8:2all the people came unto him;
| 8:2and
| 8:2he sat down,
| 8:2and
| 8:2taught them.
| 8:3And
| 8:3the scribes
| 8:3and
| 8:3Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery;
| 8:3and
| 8:3when they had set her in the midst,
| 8:4They say unto him,
| 8:4Master,
| 8:4this woman was taken in adultery,
| 8:4in the very act.
| 8:5Now Moses in the law commanded us,
| 8:5that such should be stoned:
| 8:5but
| 8:5what sayest thou?
| 8:6This they said,
| 8:6tempting him,
| 8:6that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down,
| 8:6and
| 8:6with his finger wrote on the ground,
| 8:6as though he heard them not.
| 8:7So when they continued asking him,
| 8:7he lifted up himself,
| 8:7and
| 8:7said unto them,
| 8:7He that is without sin among you,
| 8:7let him first cast a stone at her.
| 8:8And
| 8:8again he stooped down,
| 8:8and
| 8:8wrote on the ground.
| 8:9And
| 8:9they which heard it,
| 8:9being convicted by their own conscience,
| 8:9went out one by one,
| 8:9beginning at the eldest,
| 8:9even unto the last:
| 8:9and
| 8:9Jesus was left alone,
| 8:9and
| 8:9the woman standing in the midst.
| 8:10When Jesus had lifted up himself,
| 8:10and
| 8:10saw none
| 8:10but
| 8:10the woman,
| 8:10he said unto her,
| 8:10Woman,
| 8:10where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
| 8:11She said,
| 8:11No man,
| 8:11Lord. And Jesus said unto her,
| 8:11Neither do I condemn thee:
| 8:11go,
| 8:11and
| 8:11sin no more.
| 8:12Then spake Jesus again unto them,
| 8:12saying,
| 8:12I am the light of the world:
| 8:12he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
| 8:12but
| 8:12shall have the light of life.
| 8:13The Pharisees therefore said unto him,
| 8:13Thou bearest record of thyself;
| 8:13thy record is not true.
| 8:14Jesus answered
| 8:14and
| 8:14said unto them,
| 8:14Though I bear record of myself,
| 8:14yet my record is true:
| 8:14for I know whence I came,
| 8:14and
| 8:14whither I go;
| 8:14but
| 8:14ye cannot tell whence I come,
| 8:14and
| 8:14whither I go.
| 8:15Ye judge after the flesh;
| 8:15I judge no man.
| 8:16And
| 8:16yet if I judge,
| 8:16my judgment is true:
| 8:16for I am not alone,
| 8:16but
| 8:16I
| 8:16and
| 8:16the Father that sent me.
| 8:17It is also written in your law,
| 8:17that the testimony of two men is true.
| 8:18I am one that bear witness of myself,
| 8:18and
| 8:18the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
| 8:19Then said they unto him,
| 8:19Where is thy Father? Jesus answered,
| 8:19Ye neither know me,
| 8:19nor
| 8:19my Father:
| 8:19if ye had known me,
| 8:19ye should have known my Father also.
| 8:20These words spake Jesus in the treasury,
| 8:20as he taught in the temple:
| 8:20and
| 8:20no man laid hands on him;
| 8:20for his hour was not yet come.
| 8:21Then said Jesus again unto them,
| 8:21I go my way,
| 8:21and
| 8:21ye shall seek me,
| 8:21and
| 8:21shall die in your sins:
| 8:21whither I go,
| 8:21ye cannot come.
| 8:22Then said the Jews,
| 8:22Will he kill himself? because he saith,
| 8:22Whither I go,
| 8:22ye cannot come.
| 8:23And
| 8:23he said unto them,
| 8:23Ye are from beneath;
| 8:23I am from above:
| 8:23ye are of this world;
| 8:23I am not of this world.
| 8:24I said therefore unto you,
| 8:24that ye shall die in your sins:
| 8:24for if ye believe not that I am he,
| 8:24ye shall die in your sins.
| 8:25Then said they unto him,
| 8:25Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them,
| 8:25Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
| 8:26I have many things to say
| 8:26and
| 8:26to judge of you:
| 8:26but
| 8:26he that sent me is true;
| 8:26and
| 8:26I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
| 8:27They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
| 8:28Then said Jesus unto them,
| 8:28When ye have lifted up the Son of man,
| 8:28then shall ye know that I am he,
| 8:28and
| 8:28that I do nothing of myself;
| 8:28but
| 8:28as my Father hath taught me,
| 8:28I speak these things.
| 8:29And
| 8:29he that sent me is with me:
| 8:29the Father hath not left me alone;
| 8:29for I do always those things that please him.
| 8:30As he spake these words,
| 8:30many believed on him.
| 8:31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
| 8:31If ye continue in my word,
| 8:31then are ye my disciples indeed;
| 8:32And
| 8:32ye shall know the truth,
| 8:32and
| 8:32the truth shall make you free.
| 8:33They answered him,
| 8:33We be Abraham’s seed,
| 8:33and
| 8:33were never in bondage to any man:
| 8:33how sayest thou,
| 8:33Ye shall be made free?
| 8:34Jesus answered them,
| 8:34Verily,
| 8:34verily,
| 8:34I say unto you,
| 8:34Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
| 8:35And
| 8:35the servant abideth not in the house for ever:
| 8:35but
| 8:35the Son abideth ever.
| 8:36If the Son therefore shall make you free,
| 8:36ye shall be free indeed.
| 8:37I know that ye are Abraham’s seed;
| 8:37but
| 8:37ye seek to kill me,
| 8:37because my word hath no place in you.
| 8:38I speak that which I have seen with my Father:
| 8:38and
| 8:38ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
| 8:39They answered
| 8:39and
| 8:39said unto him,
| 8:39Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them,
| 8:39If ye were Abraham’s children,
| 8:39ye would do the works of Abraham.
| 8:40But
| 8:40now ye seek to kill me,
| 8:40a man that hath told you the truth,
| 8:40which I have heard of God:
| 8:40this did not Abraham.
| 8:41Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him,
| 8:41We be not born of fornication;
| 8:41we have one Father,
| 8:41even God.
| 8:42Jesus said unto them,
| 8:42If God were your Father,
| 8:42ye would love me:
| 8:42for I proceeded forth
| 8:42and
| 8:42came from God;
| 8:42neither came I of myself,
| 8:42but
| 8:42he sent me.
| 8:43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
| 8:44Ye are of your father the devil,
| 8:44and
| 8:44the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning,
| 8:44and
| 8:44abode not in the truth,
| 8:44because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie,
| 8:44he speaketh of his own:
| 8:44for he is a liar,
| 8:44and
| 8:44the father of it.
| 8:45And
| 8:45because I tell you the truth,
| 8:45ye believe me not.
| 8:46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth,
| 8:46why do ye not believe me?
| 8:47He that is of God heareth God’s words:
| 8:47ye therefore hear them not,
| 8:47because ye are not of God.
| 8:48Then answered the Jews,
| 8:48and
| 8:48said unto him,
| 8:48Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan,
| 8:48and
| 8:48hast a devil?
| 8:49Jesus answered,
| 8:49I have not a devil;
| 8:49but
| 8:49I honour my Father,
| 8:49and
| 8:49ye do dishonour me.
| 8:50And
| 8:50I seek not mine own glory:
| 8:50there is one that seeketh
| 8:50and
| 8:50judgeth.
| 8:51Verily,
| 8:51verily,
| 8:51I say unto you,
| 8:51If a man keep my saying,
| 8:51he shall never see death.
| 8:52Then said the Jews unto him,
| 8:52Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead,
| 8:52and
| 8:52the prophets;
| 8:52and
| 8:52thou sayest,
| 8:52If a man keep my saying,
| 8:52he shall never taste of death.
| 8:53Art thou greater than our father Abraham,
| 8:53which is dead?
| 8:53and
| 8:53the prophets are dead:
| 8:53whom makest thou thyself?
| 8:54Jesus answered,
| 8:54If I honour myself,
| 8:54my honour is nothing:
| 8:54it is my Father that honoureth me;
| 8:54of whom ye say,
| 8:54that he is your God:
| 8:55Yet ye have not known him;
| 8:55but
| 8:55I know him:
| 8:55and
| 8:55if I should say,
| 8:55I know him not,
| 8:55I shall be a liar like unto you:
| 8:55but
| 8:55I know him,
| 8:55and
| 8:55keep his saying.
| 8:56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day:
| 8:56and
| 8:56he saw it,
| 8:56and
| 8:56was glad.
| 8:57Then said the Jews unto him,
| 8:57Thou art not yet fifty years old,
| 8:57and
| 8:57hast thou seen Abraham?
| 8:58Jesus said unto them,
| 8:58Verily,
| 8:58verily,
| 8:58I say unto you,
| 8:58Before Abraham was,
| 8:58I am.
| 8:59Then took they up stones to cast at him:
| 8:59but
| 8:59Jesus hid himself,
| 8:59and
| 8:59went out of the temple,
| 8:59going through the midst of them,
| 8:59and
| 8:59so passed by.
Chapter 9
| 9:1And
| 9:1as Jesus passed by,
| 9:1he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
| 9:2And
| 9:2his disciples asked him,
| 9:2saying,
| 9:2Master,
| 9:2who did sin,
| 9:2this man,
| 9:2or
| 9:2his parents,
| 9:2that he was born blind?
| 9:3Jesus answered,
| 9:3Neither hath this man sinned,
| 9:3nor
| 9:3his parents:
| 9:3but
| 9:3that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
| 9:4I must work the works of him that sent me,
| 9:4while it is day:
| 9:4the night cometh,
| 9:4when no man can work.
| 9:5As long as I am in the world,
| 9:5I am the light of the world.
| 9:6When he had thus spoken,
| 9:6he spat on the ground,
| 9:6and
| 9:6made clay of the spittle,
| 9:6and
| 9:6he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
| 9:7And
| 9:7said unto him,
| 9:7Go,
| 9:7wash in the pool of Siloam,
| 9:7(which is by interpretation,
| 9:7Sent.) He went his way therefore,
| 9:7and
| 9:7washed,
| 9:7and
| 9:7came seeing.
| 9:8The neighbours therefore,
| 9:8and
| 9:8they which before had seen him that he was blind,
| 9:8said,
| 9:8Is not this he that sat
| 9:8and
| 9:8begged?
| 9:9Some said,
| 9:9This is he:
| 9:9others said,
| 9:9He is like him:
| 9:9but
| 9:9he said,
| 9:9I am he.
| 9:10Therefore said they unto him,
| 9:10How were thine eyes opened?
| 9:11He answered
| 9:11and
| 9:11said,
| 9:11A man that is called Jesus made clay,
| 9:11and
| 9:11anointed mine eyes,
| 9:11and
| 9:11said unto me,
| 9:11Go to the pool of Siloam,
| 9:11and
| 9:11wash:
| 9:11and
| 9:11I went
| 9:11and
| 9:11washed,
| 9:11and
| 9:11I received sight.
| 9:12Then said they unto him,
| 9:12Where is he? He said,
| 9:12I know not.
| 9:13They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
| 9:14And
| 9:14it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay,
| 9:14and
| 9:14opened his eyes.
| 9:15Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them,
| 9:15He put clay upon mine eyes,
| 9:15and
| 9:15I washed,
| 9:15and
| 9:15do see.
| 9:16Therefore said some of the Pharisees,
| 9:16This man is not of God,
| 9:16because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said,
| 9:16How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
| 9:17They say unto the blind man again,
| 9:17What sayest thou of him,
| 9:17that he hath opened thine eyes? He said,
| 9:17He is a prophet.
| 9:18But
| 9:18the Jews did not believe concerning him,
| 9:18that he had been blind,
| 9:18and
| 9:18received his sight,
| 9:18until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
| 9:19And
| 9:19they asked them,
| 9:19saying,
| 9:19Is this your son,
| 9:19who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
| 9:20His parents answered them
| 9:20and
| 9:20said,
| 9:20We know that this is our son,
| 9:20and
| 9:20that he was born blind:
| 9:21But
| 9:21by what means he now seeth,
| 9:21we know not;
| 9:21or
| 9:21who hath opened his eyes,
| 9:21we know not:
| 9:21he is of age;
| 9:21ask him:
| 9:21he shall speak for himself.
| 9:22These words spake his parents,
| 9:22because they feared the Jews:
| 9:22for the Jews had agreed already,
| 9:22that if any man did confess that he was Christ,
| 9:22he should be put out of the synagogue.
| 9:23Therefore said his parents,
| 9:23He is of age;
| 9:23ask him.
| 9:24Then again called they the man that was blind,
| 9:24and
| 9:24said unto him,
| 9:24Give God the praise:
| 9:24we know that this man is a sinner.
| 9:25He answered
| 9:25and
| 9:25said,
| 9:25Whether he be a sinner
| 9:25or
| 9:25no,
| 9:25I know not:
| 9:25one thing I know,
| 9:25that,
| 9:25whereas I was blind,
| 9:25now I see.
| 9:26Then said they to him again,
| 9:26What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
| 9:27He answered them,
| 9:27I have told you already,
| 9:27and
| 9:27ye did not hear:
| 9:27wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
| 9:28Then they reviled him,
| 9:28and
| 9:28said,
| 9:28Thou art his disciple;
| 9:28but
| 9:28we are Moses’ disciples.
| 9:29We know that God spake unto Moses:
| 9:29as for this fellow,
| 9:29we know not from whence he is.
| 9:30The man answered
| 9:30and
| 9:30said unto them,
| 9:30Why herein is a marvellous thing,
| 9:30that ye know not from whence he is,
| 9:30and
| 9:30yet he hath opened mine eyes.
| 9:31Now we know that God heareth not sinners:
| 9:31but
| 9:31if any man be a worshipper of God,
| 9:31and
| 9:31doeth his will,
| 9:31him he heareth.
| 9:32Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
| 9:33If this man were not of God,
| 9:33he could do nothing.
| 9:34They answered
| 9:34and
| 9:34said unto him,
| 9:34Thou wast altogether born in sins,
| 9:34and
| 9:34dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
| 9:35Jesus heard that they had cast him out;
| 9:35and
| 9:35when he had found him,
| 9:35he said unto him,
| 9:35Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
| 9:36He answered
| 9:36and
| 9:36said,
| 9:36Who is he,
| 9:36Lord,
| 9:36that I might believe on him?
| 9:37And
| 9:37Jesus said unto him,
| 9:37Thou hast both seen him,
| 9:37and
| 9:37it is he that talketh with thee.
| 9:38And
| 9:38he said,
| 9:38Lord,
| 9:38I believe. And he worshipped him.
| 9:39And
| 9:39Jesus said,
| 9:39For judgment I am come into this world,
| 9:39that they which see not might see;
| 9:39and
| 9:39that they which see might be made blind.
| 9:40And
| 9:40some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words,
| 9:40and
| 9:40said unto him,
| 9:40Are we blind also?
| 9:41Jesus said unto them,
| 9:41If ye were blind,
| 9:41ye should have no sin:
| 9:41but
| 9:41now ye say,
| 9:41We see;
| 9:41therefore your sin remaineth.
Chapter 10
| 10:1Verily,
| 10:1verily,
| 10:1I say unto you,
| 10:1He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold,
| 10:1but
| 10:1climbeth up some other way,
| 10:1the same is a thief
| 10:1and
| 10:1a robber.
| 10:2But
| 10:2he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
| 10:3To him the porter openeth;
| 10:3and
| 10:3the sheep hear his voice:
| 10:3and
| 10:3he calleth his own sheep by name,
| 10:3and
| 10:3leadeth them out.
| 10:4And
| 10:4when he putteth forth his own sheep,
| 10:4he goeth before them,
| 10:4and
| 10:4the sheep follow him:
| 10:4for they know his voice.
| 10:5And
| 10:5a stranger will they not follow,
| 10:5but
| 10:5will flee from him:
| 10:5for they know not the voice of strangers.
| 10:6This parable spake Jesus unto them:
| 10:6but
| 10:6they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
| 10:7Then said Jesus unto them again,
| 10:7Verily,
| 10:7verily,
| 10:7I say unto you,
| 10:7I am the door of the sheep.
| 10:8All that ever came before me are thieves
| 10:8and
| 10:8robbers:
| 10:8but
| 10:8the sheep did not hear them.
| 10:9I am the door:
| 10:9by me if any man enter in,
| 10:9he shall be saved,
| 10:9and
| 10:9shall go in
| 10:9and
| 10:9out,
| 10:9and
| 10:9find pasture.
| 10:10The thief cometh not,
| 10:10but
| 10:10for to steal,
| 10:10and
| 10:10to kill,
| 10:10and
| 10:10to destroy:
| 10:10I am come that they might have life,
| 10:10and
| 10:10that they might have it more abundantly.
| 10:11I am the good shepherd:
| 10:11the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
| 10:12But
| 10:12he that is an hireling,
| 10:12and
| 10:12not the shepherd,
| 10:12whose own the sheep are not,
| 10:12seeth the wolf coming,
| 10:12and
| 10:12leaveth the sheep,
| 10:12and
| 10:12fleeth:
| 10:12and
| 10:12the wolf catcheth them,
| 10:12and
| 10:12scattereth the sheep.
| 10:13The hireling fleeth,
| 10:13because he is an hireling,
| 10:13and
| 10:13careth not for the sheep.
| 10:14I am the good shepherd,
| 10:14and
| 10:14know my sheep,
| 10:14and
| 10:14am known of mine.
| 10:15As the Father knoweth me,
| 10:15even so know I the Father:
| 10:15and
| 10:15I lay down my life for the sheep.
| 10:16And
| 10:16other sheep I have,
| 10:16which are not of this fold:
| 10:16them also I must bring,
| 10:16and
| 10:16they shall hear my voice;
| 10:16and
| 10:16there shall be one fold,
| 10:16and
| 10:16one shepherd.
| 10:17Therefore doth my Father love me,
| 10:17because I lay down my life,
| 10:17that I might take it again.
| 10:18No man taketh it from me,
| 10:18but
| 10:18I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down,
| 10:18and
| 10:18I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
| 10:19There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
| 10:20And
| 10:20many of them said,
| 10:20He hath a devil,
| 10:20and
| 10:20is mad;
| 10:20why hear ye him?
| 10:21Others said,
| 10:21These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
| 10:22And
| 10:22it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication,
| 10:22and
| 10:22it was winter.
| 10:23And
| 10:23Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.
| 10:24Then came the Jews round about him,
| 10:24and
| 10:24said unto him,
| 10:24How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ,
| 10:24tell us plainly.
| 10:25Jesus answered them,
| 10:25I told you,
| 10:25and
| 10:25ye believed not:
| 10:25the works that I do in my Father’s name,
| 10:25they bear witness of me.
| 10:26But
| 10:26ye believe not,
| 10:26because ye are not of my sheep,
| 10:26as I said unto you.
| 10:27My sheep hear my voice,
| 10:27and
| 10:27I know them,
| 10:27and
| 10:27they follow me:
| 10:28And
| 10:28I give unto them eternal life;
| 10:28and
| 10:28they shall never perish,
| 10:28neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
| 10:29My Father,
| 10:29which gave them me,
| 10:29is greater than all;
| 10:29and
| 10:29no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
| 10:30I
| 10:30and
| 10:30my Father are one.
| 10:31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
| 10:32Jesus answered them,
| 10:32Many good works have I shewed you from my Father;
| 10:32for which of those works do ye stone me?
| 10:33The Jews answered him,
| 10:33saying,
| 10:33For a good work we stone thee not;
| 10:33but
| 10:33for blasphemy;
| 10:33and
| 10:33because that thou,
| 10:33being a man,
| 10:33makest thyself God.
| 10:34Jesus answered them,
| 10:34Is it not written in your law,
| 10:34I said,
| 10:34Ye are gods?
| 10:35If he called them gods,
| 10:35unto whom the word of God came,
| 10:35and
| 10:35the scripture cannot be broken;
| 10:36Say ye of him,
| 10:36whom the Father hath sanctified,
| 10:36and
| 10:36sent into the world,
| 10:36Thou blasphemest;
| 10:36because I said,
| 10:36I am the Son of God?
| 10:37If I do not the works of my Father,
| 10:37believe me not.
| 10:38But
| 10:38if I do,
| 10:38though ye believe not me,
| 10:38believe the works:
| 10:38that ye may know,
| 10:38and
| 10:38believe,
| 10:38that the Father is in me,
| 10:38and
| 10:38I in him.
| 10:39Therefore they sought again to take him:
| 10:39but
| 10:39he escaped out of their hand,
| 10:40And
| 10:40went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized;
| 10:40and
| 10:40there he abode.
| 10:41And
| 10:41many resorted unto him,
| 10:41and
| 10:41said,
| 10:41John did no miracle:
| 10:41but
| 10:41all things that John spake of this man were true.
| 10:42And
| 10:42many believed on him there.
Chapter 11
| 11:1Now a certain man was sick,
| 11:1named Lazarus,
| 11:1of Bethany,
| 11:1the town of Mary
| 11:1and
| 11:1her sister Martha.
| 11:2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment,
| 11:2and
| 11:2wiped his feet with her hair,
| 11:2whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
| 11:3Therefore his sisters sent unto him,
| 11:3saying,
| 11:3Lord,
| 11:3behold,
| 11:3he whom thou lovest is sick.
| 11:4When Jesus heard that,
| 11:4he said,
| 11:4This sickness is not unto death,
| 11:4but
| 11:4for the glory of God,
| 11:4that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
| 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha,
| 11:5and
| 11:5her sister,
| 11:5and
| 11:5Lazarus.
| 11:6When he had heard therefore that he was sick,
| 11:6he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
| 11:7Then after that saith he to his disciples,
| 11:7Let us go into Judaea again.
| 11:8His disciples say unto him,
| 11:8Master,
| 11:8the Jews of late sought to stone thee;
| 11:8and
| 11:8goest thou thither again?
| 11:9Jesus answered,
| 11:9Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day,
| 11:9he stumbleth not,
| 11:9because he seeth the light of this world.
| 11:10But
| 11:10if a man walk in the night,
| 11:10he stumbleth,
| 11:10because there is no light in him.
| 11:11These things said he:
| 11:11and
| 11:11after that he saith unto them,
| 11:11Our friend Lazarus sleepeth;
| 11:11but
| 11:11I go,
| 11:11that I may awake him out of sleep.
| 11:12Then said his disciples,
| 11:12Lord,
| 11:12if he sleep,
| 11:12he shall do well.
| 11:13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death:
| 11:13but
| 11:13they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
| 11:14Then said Jesus unto them plainly,
| 11:14Lazarus is dead.
| 11:15And
| 11:15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there,
| 11:15to the intent ye may believe;
| 11:15nevertheless let us go unto him.
| 11:16Then said Thomas,
| 11:16which is called Didymus,
| 11:16unto his fellow disciples,
| 11:16Let us also go,
| 11:16that we may die with him.
| 11:17Then when Jesus came,
| 11:17he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
| 11:18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem,
| 11:18about fifteen furlongs off:
| 11:19And
| 11:19many of the Jews came to Martha
| 11:19and
| 11:19Mary,
| 11:19to comfort them concerning their brother.
| 11:20Then Martha,
| 11:20as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming,
| 11:20went
| 11:20and
| 11:20met him:
| 11:20but
| 11:20Mary sat still in the house.
| 11:21Then said Martha unto Jesus,
| 11:21Lord,
| 11:21if thou hadst been here,
| 11:21my brother had not died.
| 11:22But
| 11:22I know,
| 11:22that even now,
| 11:22whatsoever thou wilt ask of God,
| 11:22God will give it thee.
| 11:23Jesus saith unto her,
| 11:23Thy brother shall rise again.
| 11:24Martha saith unto him,
| 11:24I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
| 11:25Jesus said unto her,
| 11:25I am the resurrection,
| 11:25and
| 11:25the life:
| 11:25he that believeth in me,
| 11:25though he were dead,
| 11:25yet shall he live:
| 11:26And
| 11:26whosoever liveth
| 11:26and
| 11:26believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
| 11:27She saith unto him,
| 11:27Yea,
| 11:27Lord:
| 11:27I believe that thou art the Christ,
| 11:27the Son of God,
| 11:27which should come into the world.
| 11:28And
| 11:28when she had so said,
| 11:28she went her way,
| 11:28and
| 11:28called Mary her sister secretly,
| 11:28saying,
| 11:28The Master is come,
| 11:28and
| 11:28calleth for thee.
| 11:29As soon as she heard that,
| 11:29she arose quickly,
| 11:29and
| 11:29came unto him.
| 11:30Now Jesus was not yet come into the town,
| 11:30but
| 11:30was in that place where Martha met him.
| 11:31The Jews then which were with her in the house,
| 11:31and
| 11:31comforted her,
| 11:31when they saw Mary,
| 11:31that she rose up hastily
| 11:31and
| 11:31went out,
| 11:31followed her,
| 11:31saying,
| 11:31She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
| 11:32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was,
| 11:32and
| 11:32saw him,
| 11:32she fell down at his feet,
| 11:32saying unto him,
| 11:32Lord,
| 11:32if thou hadst been here,
| 11:32my brother had not died.
| 11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping,
| 11:33and
| 11:33the Jews also weeping which came with her,
| 11:33he groaned in the spirit,
| 11:33and
| 11:33was troubled.
| 11:34And
| 11:34said,
| 11:34Where have ye laid him? They said unto him,
| 11:34Lord,
| 11:34come
| 11:34and
| 11:34see.
| 11:35Jesus wept.
| 11:36Then said the Jews,
| 11:36Behold how he loved him!
| 11:37And
| 11:37some of them said,
| 11:37Could not this man,
| 11:37which opened the eyes of the blind,
| 11:37have caused that even this man should not have died?
| 11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave,
| 11:38and
| 11:38a stone lay upon it.
| 11:39Jesus said,
| 11:39Take ye away the stone. Martha,
| 11:39the sister of him that was dead,
| 11:39saith unto him,
| 11:39Lord,
| 11:39by this time he stinketh:
| 11:39for he hath been dead four days.
| 11:40Jesus saith unto her,
| 11:40Said I not unto thee,
| 11:40that,
| 11:40if thou wouldest believe,
| 11:40thou shouldest see the glory of God?
| 11:41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes,
| 11:41and
| 11:41said,
| 11:41Father,
| 11:41I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
| 11:42And
| 11:42I knew that thou hearest me always:
| 11:42but
| 11:42because of the people which stand by I said it,
| 11:42that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
| 11:43And
| 11:43when he thus had spoken,
| 11:43he cried with a loud voice,
| 11:43Lazarus,
| 11:43come forth.
| 11:44And
| 11:44he that was dead came forth,
| 11:44bound hand
| 11:44and
| 11:44foot with graveclothes:
| 11:44and
| 11:44his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them,
| 11:44Loose him,
| 11:44and
| 11:44let him go.
| 11:45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary,
| 11:45and
| 11:45had seen the things which Jesus did,
| 11:45believed on him.
| 11:46But
| 11:46some of them went their ways to the Pharisees,
| 11:46and
| 11:46told them what things Jesus had done.
| 11:47Then gathered the chief priests
| 11:47and
| 11:47the Pharisees a council,
| 11:47and
| 11:47said,
| 11:47What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
| 11:48If we let him thus alone,
| 11:48all men will believe on him:
| 11:48and
| 11:48the Romans shall come
| 11:48and
| 11:48take away both our place
| 11:48and
| 11:48nation.
| 11:49And
| 11:49one of them,
| 11:49named Caiaphas,
| 11:49being the high priest that same year,
| 11:49said unto them,
| 11:49Ye know nothing at all,
| 11:50Nor
| 11:50consider that it is expedient for us,
| 11:50that one man should die for the people,
| 11:50and
| 11:50that the whole nation perish not.
| 11:51And
| 11:51this spake he not of himself:
| 11:51but
| 11:51being high priest that year,
| 11:51he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
| 11:52And
| 11:52not for that nation only,
| 11:52but
| 11:52that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
| 11:53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
| 11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews;
| 11:54but
| 11:54went thence unto a country near to the wilderness,
| 11:54into a city called Ephraim,
| 11:54and
| 11:54there continued with his disciples.
| 11:55And
| 11:55the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand:
| 11:55and
| 11:55many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover,
| 11:55to purify themselves.
| 11:56Then sought they for Jesus,
| 11:56and
| 11:56spake among themselves,
| 11:56as they stood in the temple,
| 11:56What think ye,
| 11:56that he will not come to the feast?
| 11:57Now both the chief priests
| 11:57and
| 11:57the Pharisees had given a commandment,
| 11:57that,
| 11:57if any man knew where he were,
| 11:57he should shew it,
| 11:57that they might take him.
Chapter 12
| 12:1Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany,
| 12:1where Lazarus was,
| 12:1which had been dead,
| 12:1whom he raised from the dead.
| 12:2There they made him a supper;
| 12:2and
| 12:2Martha served:
| 12:2but
| 12:2Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
| 12:3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard,
| 12:3very costly,
| 12:3and
| 12:3anointed the feet of Jesus,
| 12:3and
| 12:3wiped his feet with her hair:
| 12:3and
| 12:3the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
| 12:4Then saith one of his disciples,
| 12:4Judas Iscariot,
| 12:4Simon’s son,
| 12:4which should betray him,
| 12:5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence,
| 12:5and
| 12:5given to the poor?
| 12:6This he said,
| 12:6not that he cared for the poor;
| 12:6but
| 12:6because he was a thief,
| 12:6and
| 12:6had the bag,
| 12:6and
| 12:6bare what was put therein.
| 12:7Then said Jesus,
| 12:7Let her alone:
| 12:7against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
| 12:8For the poor always ye have with you;
| 12:8but
| 12:8me ye have not always.
| 12:9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there:
| 12:9and
| 12:9they came not for Jesus’ sake only,
| 12:9but
| 12:9that they might see Lazarus also,
| 12:9whom he had raised from the dead.
| 12:10But
| 12:10the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
| 12:11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away,
| 12:11and
| 12:11believed on Jesus.
| 12:12On the next day much people that were come to the feast,
| 12:12when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
| 12:13Took branches of palm trees,
| 12:13and
| 12:13went forth to meet him,
| 12:13and
| 12:13cried,
| 12:13Hosanna:
| 12:13Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
| 12:14And
| 12:14Jesus,
| 12:14when he had found a young ass,
| 12:14sat thereon;
| 12:14as it is written,
| 12:15Fear not,
| 12:15daughter of Sion:
| 12:15behold,
| 12:15thy King cometh,
| 12:15sitting on an ass’s colt.
| 12:16These things understood not his disciples at the first:
| 12:16but
| 12:16when Jesus was glorified,
| 12:16then remembered they that these things were written of him,
| 12:16and
| 12:16that they had done these things unto him.
| 12:17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave,
| 12:17and
| 12:17raised him from the dead,
| 12:17bare record.
| 12:18For this cause the people also met him,
| 12:18for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
| 12:19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves,
| 12:19Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold,
| 12:19the world is gone after him.
| 12:20And
| 12:20there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
| 12:21The same came therefore to Philip,
| 12:21which was of Bethsaida of Galilee,
| 12:21and
| 12:21desired him,
| 12:21saying,
| 12:21Sir,
| 12:21we would see Jesus.
| 12:22Philip cometh
| 12:22and
| 12:22telleth Andrew:
| 12:22and
| 12:22again Andrew
| 12:22and
| 12:22Philip tell Jesus.
| 12:23And
| 12:23Jesus answered them,
| 12:23saying,
| 12:23The hour is come,
| 12:23that the Son of man should be glorified.
| 12:24Verily,
| 12:24verily,
| 12:24I say unto you,
| 12:24Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground
| 12:24and
| 12:24die,
| 12:24it abideth alone:
| 12:24but
| 12:24if it die,
| 12:24it bringeth forth much fruit.
| 12:25He that loveth his life shall lose it;
| 12:25and
| 12:25he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
| 12:26If any man serve me,
| 12:26let him follow me;
| 12:26and
| 12:26where I am,
| 12:26there shall also my servant be:
| 12:26if any man serve me,
| 12:26him will my Father honour.
| 12:27Now is my soul troubled;
| 12:27and
| 12:27what shall I say? Father,
| 12:27save me from this hour:
| 12:27but
| 12:27for this cause came I unto this hour.
| 12:28Father,
| 12:28glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven,
| 12:28saying,
| 12:28I have both glorified it,
| 12:28and
| 12:28will glorify it again.
| 12:29The people therefore,
| 12:29that stood by,
| 12:29and
| 12:29heard it,
| 12:29said that it thundered:
| 12:29others said,
| 12:29An angel spake to him.
| 12:30Jesus answered
| 12:30and
| 12:30said,
| 12:30This voice came not because of me,
| 12:30but
| 12:30for your sakes.
| 12:31Now is the judgment of this world:
| 12:31now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
| 12:32And
| 12:32I,
| 12:32if I be lifted up from the earth,
| 12:32will draw all men unto me.
| 12:33This he said,
| 12:33signifying what death he should die.
| 12:34The people answered him,
| 12:34We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever:
| 12:34and
| 12:34how sayest thou,
| 12:34The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
| 12:35Then Jesus said unto them,
| 12:35Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light,
| 12:35lest darkness come upon you:
| 12:35for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
| 12:36While ye have light,
| 12:36believe in the light,
| 12:36that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus,
| 12:36and
| 12:36departed,
| 12:36and
| 12:36did hide himself from them.
| 12:37But
| 12:37though he had done so many miracles before them,
| 12:37yet they believed not on him:
| 12:38That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled,
| 12:38which he spake,
| 12:38Lord,
| 12:38who hath believed our report?
| 12:38and
| 12:38to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
| 12:39Therefore they could not believe,
| 12:39because that Esaias said again,
| 12:40He hath blinded their eyes,
| 12:40and
| 12:40hardened their heart;
| 12:40that they should not see with their eyes,
| 12:40nor
| 12:40understand with their heart,
| 12:40and
| 12:40be converted,
| 12:40and
| 12:40I should heal them.
| 12:41These things said Esaias,
| 12:41when he saw his glory,
| 12:41and
| 12:41spake of him.
| 12:42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him;
| 12:42but
| 12:42because of the Pharisees they did not confess him,
| 12:42lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
| 12:43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
| 12:44Jesus cried
| 12:44and
| 12:44said,
| 12:44He that believeth on me,
| 12:44believeth not on me,
| 12:44but
| 12:44on him that sent me.
| 12:45And
| 12:45he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
| 12:46I am come a light into the world,
| 12:46that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
| 12:47And
| 12:47if any man hear my words,
| 12:47and
| 12:47believe not,
| 12:47I judge him not:
| 12:47for I came not to judge the world,
| 12:47but
| 12:47to save the world.
| 12:48He that rejecteth me,
| 12:48and
| 12:48receiveth not my words,
| 12:48hath one that judgeth him:
| 12:48the word that I have spoken,
| 12:48the same shall judge him in the last day.
| 12:49For I have not spoken of myself;
| 12:49but
| 12:49the Father which sent me,
| 12:49he gave me a commandment,
| 12:49what I should say,
| 12:49and
| 12:49what I should speak.
| 12:50And
| 12:50I know that his commandment is life everlasting:
| 12:50whatsoever I speak therefore,
| 12:50even as the Father said unto me,
| 12:50so I speak.
Chapter 13
| 13:1Now before the feast of the passover,
| 13:1when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father,
| 13:1having loved his own which were in the world,
| 13:1he loved them unto the end.
| 13:2And
| 13:2supper being ended,
| 13:2the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot,
| 13:2Simon’s son,
| 13:2to betray him;
| 13:3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands,
| 13:3and
| 13:3that he was come from God,
| 13:3and
| 13:3went to God;
| 13:4He riseth from supper,
| 13:4and
| 13:4laid aside his garments;
| 13:4and
| 13:4took a towel,
| 13:4and
| 13:4girded himself.
| 13:5After that he poureth water into a bason,
| 13:5and
| 13:5began to wash the disciples’ feet,
| 13:5and
| 13:5to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
| 13:6Then cometh he to Simon Peter:
| 13:6and
| 13:6Peter saith unto him,
| 13:6Lord,
| 13:6dost thou wash my feet?
| 13:7Jesus answered
| 13:7and
| 13:7said unto him,
| 13:7What I do thou knowest not now;
| 13:7but
| 13:7thou shalt know hereafter.
| 13:8Peter saith unto him,
| 13:8Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him,
| 13:8If I wash thee not,
| 13:8thou hast no part with me.
| 13:9Simon Peter saith unto him,
| 13:9Lord,
| 13:9not my feet only,
| 13:9but
| 13:9also my hands
| 13:9and
| 13:9my head.
| 13:10Jesus saith to him,
| 13:10He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet,
| 13:10but
| 13:10is clean every whit:
| 13:10and
| 13:10ye are clean,
| 13:10but
| 13:10not all.
| 13:11For he knew who should betray him;
| 13:11therefore said he,
| 13:11Ye are not all clean.
| 13:12So after he had washed their feet,
| 13:12and
| 13:12had taken his garments,
| 13:12and
| 13:12was set down again,
| 13:12he said unto them,
| 13:12Know ye what I have done to you?
| 13:13Ye call me Master
| 13:13and
| 13:13Lord:
| 13:13and
| 13:13ye say well;
| 13:13for so I am.
| 13:14If I then,
| 13:14your Lord
| 13:14and
| 13:14Master,
| 13:14have washed your feet;
| 13:14ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
| 13:15For I have given you an example,
| 13:15that ye should do as I have done to you.
| 13:16Verily,
| 13:16verily,
| 13:16I say unto you,
| 13:16The servant is not greater than his lord;
| 13:16neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
| 13:17If ye know these things,
| 13:17happy are ye if ye do them.
| 13:18I speak not of you all:
| 13:18I know whom I have chosen:
| 13:18but
| 13:18that the scripture may be fulfilled,
| 13:18He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
| 13:19Now I tell you before it come,
| 13:19that,
| 13:19when it is come to pass,
| 13:19ye may believe that I am he.
| 13:20Verily,
| 13:20verily,
| 13:20I say unto you,
| 13:20He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me;
| 13:20and
| 13:20he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
| 13:21When Jesus had thus said,
| 13:21he was troubled in spirit,
| 13:21and
| 13:21testified,
| 13:21and
| 13:21said,
| 13:21Verily,
| 13:21verily,
| 13:21I say unto you,
| 13:21that one of you shall betray me.
| 13:22Then the disciples looked one on another,
| 13:22doubting of whom he spake.
| 13:23Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples,
| 13:23whom Jesus loved.
| 13:24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him,
| 13:24that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
| 13:25He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him,
| 13:25Lord,
| 13:25who is it?
| 13:26Jesus answered,
| 13:26He it is,
| 13:26to whom I shall give a sop,
| 13:26when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop,
| 13:26he gave it to Judas Iscariot,
| 13:26the son of Simon.
| 13:27And
| 13:27after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him,
| 13:27That thou doest,
| 13:27do quickly.
| 13:28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
| 13:29For some of them thought,
| 13:29because Judas had the bag,
| 13:29that Jesus had said unto him,
| 13:29Buy those things that we have need of against the feast;
| 13:29or
| 13:29,
| 13:29that he should give something to the poor.
| 13:30He then having received the sop went immediately out:
| 13:30and
| 13:30it was night.
| 13:31Therefore,
| 13:31when he was gone out,
| 13:31Jesus said,
| 13:31Now is the Son of man glorified,
| 13:31and
| 13:31God is glorified in him.
| 13:32If God be glorified in him,
| 13:32God shall also glorify him in himself,
| 13:32and
| 13:32shall straightway glorify him.
| 13:33Little children,
| 13:33yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me:
| 13:33and
| 13:33as I said unto the Jews,
| 13:33Whither I go,
| 13:33ye cannot come;
| 13:33so now I say to you.
| 13:34A new commandment I give unto you,
| 13:34That ye love one another;
| 13:34as I have loved you,
| 13:34that ye also love one another.
| 13:35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
| 13:35if ye have love one to another.
| 13:36Simon Peter said unto him,
| 13:36Lord,
| 13:36whither goest thou? Jesus answered him,
| 13:36Whither I go,
| 13:36thou canst not follow me now;
| 13:36but
| 13:36thou shalt follow me afterwards.
| 13:37Peter said unto him,
| 13:37Lord,
| 13:37why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
| 13:38Jesus answered him,
| 13:38Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily,
| 13:38verily,
| 13:38I say unto thee,
| 13:38The cock shall not crow,
| 13:38till thou hast denied me thrice.
Chapter 14
| 14:1Let not your heart be troubled:
| 14:1ye believe in God,
| 14:1believe also in me.
| 14:2In my Father’s house are many mansions:
| 14:2if it were not so,
| 14:2I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
| 14:3And
| 14:3if I go
| 14:3and
| 14:3prepare a place for you,
| 14:3I will come again,
| 14:3and
| 14:3receive you unto myself;
| 14:3that where I am,
| 14:3there ye may be also.
| 14:4And
| 14:4whither I go ye know,
| 14:4and
| 14:4the way ye know.
| 14:5Thomas saith unto him,
| 14:5Lord,
| 14:5we know not whither thou goest;
| 14:5and
| 14:5how can we know the way?
| 14:6Jesus saith unto him,
| 14:6I am the way,
| 14:6the truth,
| 14:6and
| 14:6the life:
| 14:6no man cometh unto the Father,
| 14:6but
| 14:6by me.
| 14:7If ye had known me,
| 14:7ye should have known my Father also:
| 14:7and
| 14:7from henceforth ye know him,
| 14:7and
| 14:7have seen him.
| 14:8Philip saith unto him,
| 14:8Lord,
| 14:8shew us the Father,
| 14:8and
| 14:8it sufficeth us.
| 14:9Jesus saith unto him,
| 14:9Have I been so long time with you,
| 14:9and
| 14:9yet hast thou not known me,
| 14:9Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father;
| 14:9and
| 14:9how sayest thou then,
| 14:9Shew us the Father?
| 14:10Believest thou not that I am in the Father,
| 14:10and
| 14:10the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself:
| 14:10but
| 14:10the Father that dwelleth in me,
| 14:10he doeth the works.
| 14:11Believe me that I am in the Father,
| 14:11and
| 14:11the Father in me:
| 14:11or
| 14:11else believe me for the very works’ sake.
| 14:12Verily,
| 14:12verily,
| 14:12I say unto you,
| 14:12He that believeth on me,
| 14:12the works that I do shall he do also;
| 14:12and
| 14:12greater works than these shall he do;
| 14:12because I go unto my Father.
| 14:13And
| 14:13whatsoever ye shall ask in my name,
| 14:13that will I do,
| 14:13that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
| 14:14If ye shall ask any thing in my name,
| 14:14I will do it.
| 14:15If ye love me,
| 14:15keep my commandments.
| 14:16And
| 14:16I will pray the Father,
| 14:16and
| 14:16he shall give you another Comforter,
| 14:16that he may abide with you for ever;
| 14:17Even the Spirit of truth;
| 14:17whom the world cannot receive,
| 14:17because it seeth him not,
| 14:17neither knoweth him:
| 14:17but
| 14:17ye know him;
| 14:17for he dwelleth with you,
| 14:17and
| 14:17shall be in you.
| 14:18I will not leave you comfortless:
| 14:18I will come to you.
| 14:19Yet a little while,
| 14:19and
| 14:19the world seeth me no more;
| 14:19but
| 14:19ye see me:
| 14:19because I live,
| 14:19ye shall live also.
| 14:20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father,
| 14:20and
| 14:20ye in me,
| 14:20and
| 14:20I in you.
| 14:21He that hath my commandments,
| 14:21and
| 14:21keepeth them,
| 14:21he it is that loveth me:
| 14:21and
| 14:21he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
| 14:21and
| 14:21I will love him,
| 14:21and
| 14:21will manifest myself to him.
| 14:22Judas saith unto him,
| 14:22not Iscariot,
| 14:22Lord,
| 14:22how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us,
| 14:22and
| 14:22not unto the world?
| 14:23Jesus answered
| 14:23and
| 14:23said unto him,
| 14:23If a man love me,
| 14:23he will keep my words:
| 14:23and
| 14:23my Father will love him,
| 14:23and
| 14:23we will come unto him,
| 14:23and
| 14:23make our abode with him.
| 14:24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
| 14:24and
| 14:24the word which ye hear is not mine,
| 14:24but
| 14:24the Father’s which sent me.
| 14:25These things have I spoken unto you,
| 14:25being yet present with you.
| 14:26But
| 14:26the Comforter,
| 14:26which is the Holy Ghost,
| 14:26whom the Father will send in my name,
| 14:26he shall teach you all things,
| 14:26and
| 14:26bring all things to your remembrance,
| 14:26whatsoever I have said unto you.
| 14:27Peace I leave with you,
| 14:27my peace I give unto you:
| 14:27not as the world giveth,
| 14:27give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled,
| 14:27neither let it be afraid.
| 14:28Ye have heard how I said unto you,
| 14:28I go away,
| 14:28and
| 14:28come again unto you. If ye loved me,
| 14:28ye would rejoice,
| 14:28because I said,
| 14:28I go unto the Father:
| 14:28for my Father is greater than I.
| 14:29And
| 14:29now I have told you before it come to pass,
| 14:29that,
| 14:29when it is come to pass,
| 14:29ye might believe.
| 14:30Hereafter I will not talk much with you:
| 14:30for the prince of this world cometh,
| 14:30and
| 14:30hath nothing in me.
| 14:31But
| 14:31that the world may know that I love the Father;
| 14:31and
| 14:31as the Father gave me commandment,
| 14:31even so I do. Arise,
| 14:31let us go hence.
Chapter 15
| 15:1I am the true vine,
| 15:1and
| 15:1my Father is the husbandman.
| 15:2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away:
| 15:2and
| 15:2every branch that beareth fruit,
| 15:2he purgeth it,
| 15:2that it may bring forth more fruit.
| 15:3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
| 15:4Abide in me,
| 15:4and
| 15:4I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself,
| 15:4except it abide in the vine;
| 15:4no more can ye,
| 15:4except ye abide in me.
| 15:5I am the vine,
| 15:5ye are the branches:
| 15:5He that abideth in me,
| 15:5and
| 15:5I in him,
| 15:5the same bringeth forth much fruit:
| 15:5for without me ye can do nothing.
| 15:6If a man abide not in me,
| 15:6he is cast forth as a branch,
| 15:6and
| 15:6is withered;
| 15:6and
| 15:6men gather them,
| 15:6and
| 15:6cast them into the fire,
| 15:6and
| 15:6they are burned.
| 15:7If ye abide in me,
| 15:7and
| 15:7my words abide in you,
| 15:7ye shall ask what ye will,
| 15:7and
| 15:7it shall be done unto you.
| 15:8Herein is my Father glorified,
| 15:8that ye bear much fruit;
| 15:8so shall ye be my disciples.
| 15:9As the Father hath loved me,
| 15:9so have I loved you:
| 15:9continue ye in my love.
| 15:10If ye keep my commandments,
| 15:10ye shall abide in my love;
| 15:10even as I have kept my Father’s commandments,
| 15:10and
| 15:10abide in his love.
| 15:11These things have I spoken unto you,
| 15:11that my joy might remain in you,
| 15:11and
| 15:11that your joy might be full.
| 15:12This is my commandment,
| 15:12That ye love one another,
| 15:12as I have loved you.
| 15:13Greater love hath no man than this,
| 15:13that a man lay down his life for his friends.
| 15:14Ye are my friends,
| 15:14if ye do whatsoever I command you.
| 15:15Henceforth I call you not servants;
| 15:15for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth:
| 15:15but
| 15:15I have called you friends;
| 15:15for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
| 15:16Ye have not chosen me,
| 15:16but
| 15:16I have chosen you,
| 15:16and
| 15:16ordained you,
| 15:16that ye should go
| 15:16and
| 15:16bring forth fruit,
| 15:16and
| 15:16that your fruit should remain:
| 15:16that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name,
| 15:16he may give it you.
| 15:17These things I command you,
| 15:17that ye love one another.
| 15:18If the world hate you,
| 15:18ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
| 15:19If ye were of the world,
| 15:19the world would love his own:
| 15:19but
| 15:19because ye are not of the world,
| 15:19but
| 15:19I have chosen you out of the world,
| 15:19therefore the world hateth you.
| 15:20Remember the word that I said unto you,
| 15:20The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me,
| 15:20they will also persecute you;
| 15:20if they have kept my saying,
| 15:20they will keep yours also.
| 15:21But
| 15:21all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake,
| 15:21because they know not him that sent me.
| 15:22If I had not come
| 15:22and
| 15:22spoken unto them,
| 15:22they had not had sin:
| 15:22but
| 15:22now they have no cloak for their sin.
| 15:23He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
| 15:24If I had not done among them the works which none other man did,
| 15:24they had not had sin:
| 15:24but
| 15:24now have they both seen
| 15:24and
| 15:24hated both me
| 15:24and
| 15:24my Father.
| 15:25But
| 15:25this cometh to pass,
| 15:25that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law,
| 15:25They hated me without a cause.
| 15:26But
| 15:26when the Comforter is come,
| 15:26whom I will send unto you from the Father,
| 15:26even the Spirit of truth,
| 15:26which proceedeth from the Father,
| 15:26he shall testify of me:
| 15:27And
| 15:27ye also shall bear witness,
| 15:27because ye have been with me from the beginning.
Chapter 16
| 16:1These things have I spoken unto you,
| 16:1that ye should not be offended.
| 16:2They shall put you out of the synagogues:
| 16:2yea,
| 16:2the time cometh,
| 16:2that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
| 16:3And
| 16:3these things will they do unto you,
| 16:3because they have not known the Father,
| 16:3nor
| 16:3me.
| 16:4But
| 16:4these things have I told you,
| 16:4that when the time shall come,
| 16:4ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning,
| 16:4because I was with you.
| 16:5But
| 16:5now I go my way to him that sent me;
| 16:5and
| 16:5none of you asketh me,
| 16:5Whither goest thou?
| 16:6But
| 16:6because I have said these things unto you,
| 16:6sorrow hath filled your heart.
| 16:7Nevertheless I tell you the truth;
| 16:7It is expedient for you that I go away:
| 16:7for if I go not away,
| 16:7the Comforter will not come unto you;
| 16:7but
| 16:7if I depart,
| 16:7I will send him unto you.
| 16:8And
| 16:8when he is come,
| 16:8he will reprove the world of sin,
| 16:8and
| 16:8of righteousness,
| 16:8and
| 16:8of judgment:
| 16:9Of sin,
| 16:9because they believe not on me;
| 16:10Of righteousness,
| 16:10because I go to my Father,
| 16:10and
| 16:10ye see me no more;
| 16:11Of judgment,
| 16:11because the prince of this world is judged.
| 16:12I have yet many things to say unto you,
| 16:12but
| 16:12ye cannot bear them now.
| 16:13Howbeit when he,
| 16:13the Spirit of truth,
| 16:13is come,
| 16:13he will guide you into all truth:
| 16:13for he shall not speak of himself;
| 16:13but
| 16:13whatsoever he shall hear,
| 16:13that shall he speak:
| 16:13and
| 16:13he will shew you things to come.
| 16:14He shall glorify me:
| 16:14for he shall receive of mine,
| 16:14and
| 16:14shall shew it unto you.
| 16:15All things that the Father hath are mine:
| 16:15therefore said I,
| 16:15that he shall take of mine,
| 16:15and
| 16:15shall shew it unto you.
| 16:16A little while,
| 16:16and
| 16:16ye shall not see me:
| 16:16and
| 16:16again,
| 16:16a little while,
| 16:16and
| 16:16ye shall see me,
| 16:16because I go to the Father.
| 16:17Then said some of his disciples among themselves,
| 16:17What is this that he saith unto us,
| 16:17A little while,
| 16:17and
| 16:17ye shall not see me:
| 16:17and
| 16:17again,
| 16:17a little while,
| 16:17and
| 16:17ye shall see me:
| 16:17and
| 16:17,
| 16:17Because I go to the Father?
| 16:18They said therefore,
| 16:18What is this that he saith,
| 16:18A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
| 16:19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him,
| 16:19and
| 16:19said unto them,
| 16:19Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said,
| 16:19A little while,
| 16:19and
| 16:19ye shall not see me:
| 16:19and
| 16:19again,
| 16:19a little while,
| 16:19and
| 16:19ye shall see me?
| 16:20Verily,
| 16:20verily,
| 16:20I say unto you,
| 16:20That ye shall weep
| 16:20and
| 16:20lament,
| 16:20but
| 16:20the world shall rejoice:
| 16:20and
| 16:20ye shall be sorrowful,
| 16:20but
| 16:20your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
| 16:21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow,
| 16:21because her hour is come:
| 16:21but
| 16:21as soon as she is delivered of the child,
| 16:21she remembereth no more the anguish,
| 16:21for joy that a man is born into the world.
| 16:22And
| 16:22ye now therefore have sorrow:
| 16:22but
| 16:22I will see you again,
| 16:22and
| 16:22your heart shall rejoice,
| 16:22and
| 16:22your joy no man taketh from you.
| 16:23And
| 16:23in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily,
| 16:23verily,
| 16:23I say unto you,
| 16:23Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name,
| 16:23he will give it you.
| 16:24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name:
| 16:24ask,
| 16:24and
| 16:24ye shall receive,
| 16:24that your joy may be full.
| 16:25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs:
| 16:25but
| 16:25the time cometh,
| 16:25when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs,
| 16:25but
| 16:25I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
| 16:26At that day ye shall ask in my name:
| 16:26and
| 16:26I say not unto you,
| 16:26that I will pray the Father for you:
| 16:27For the Father himself loveth you,
| 16:27because ye have loved me,
| 16:27and
| 16:27have believed that I came out from God.
| 16:28I came forth from the Father,
| 16:28and
| 16:28am come into the world:
| 16:28again,
| 16:28I leave the world,
| 16:28and
| 16:28go to the Father.
| 16:29His disciples said unto him,
| 16:29Lo,
| 16:29now speakest thou plainly,
| 16:29and
| 16:29speakest no proverb.
| 16:30Now are we sure that thou knowest all things,
| 16:30and
| 16:30needest not that any man should ask thee:
| 16:30by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
| 16:31Jesus answered them,
| 16:31Do ye now believe?
| 16:32Behold,
| 16:32the hour cometh,
| 16:32yea,
| 16:32is now come,
| 16:32that ye shall be scattered,
| 16:32every man to his own,
| 16:32and
| 16:32shall leave me alone:
| 16:32and
| 16:32yet I am not alone,
| 16:32because the Father is with me.
| 16:33These things I have spoken unto you,
| 16:33that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation:
| 16:33but
| 16:33be of good cheer;
| 16:33I have overcome the world.
Chapter 17
| 17:1These words spake Jesus,
| 17:1and
| 17:1lifted up his eyes to heaven,
| 17:1and
| 17:1said,
| 17:1Father,
| 17:1the hour is come;
| 17:1glorify thy Son,
| 17:1that thy Son also may glorify thee:
| 17:2As thou hast given him power over all flesh,
| 17:2that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
| 17:3And
| 17:3this is life eternal,
| 17:3that they might know thee the only true God,
| 17:3and
| 17:3Jesus Christ,
| 17:3whom thou hast sent.
| 17:4I have glorified thee on the earth:
| 17:4I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
| 17:5And
| 17:5now,
| 17:5O Father,
| 17:5glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
| 17:6I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world:
| 17:6thine they were,
| 17:6and
| 17:6thou gavest them me;
| 17:6and
| 17:6they have kept thy word.
| 17:7Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
| 17:8For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me;
| 17:8and
| 17:8they have received them,
| 17:8and
| 17:8have known surely that I came out from thee,
| 17:8and
| 17:8they have believed that thou didst send me.
| 17:9I pray for them:
| 17:9I pray not for the world,
| 17:9but
| 17:9for them which thou hast given me;
| 17:9for they are thine.
| 17:10And
| 17:10all mine are thine,
| 17:10and
| 17:10thine are mine;
| 17:10and
| 17:10I am glorified in them.
| 17:11And
| 17:11now I am no more in the world,
| 17:11but
| 17:11these are in the world,
| 17:11and
| 17:11I come to thee. Holy Father,
| 17:11keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me,
| 17:11that they may be one,
| 17:11as we are.
| 17:12While I was with them in the world,
| 17:12I kept them in thy name:
| 17:12those that thou gavest me I have kept,
| 17:12and
| 17:12none of them is lost,
| 17:12but
| 17:12the son of perdition;
| 17:12that the scripture might be fulfilled.
| 17:13And
| 17:13now come I to thee;
| 17:13and
| 17:13these things I speak in the world,
| 17:13that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
| 17:14I have given them thy word;
| 17:14and
| 17:14the world hath hated them,
| 17:14because they are not of the world,
| 17:14even as I am not of the world.
| 17:15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world,
| 17:15but
| 17:15that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
| 17:16They are not of the world,
| 17:16even as I am not of the world.
| 17:17Sanctify them through thy truth:
| 17:17thy word is truth.
| 17:18As thou hast sent me into the world,
| 17:18even so have I also sent them into the world.
| 17:19And
| 17:19for their sakes I sanctify myself,
| 17:19that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
| 17:20Neither pray I for these alone,
| 17:20but
| 17:20for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
| 17:21That they all may be one;
| 17:21as thou,
| 17:21Father,
| 17:21art in me,
| 17:21and
| 17:21I in thee,
| 17:21that they also may be one in us:
| 17:21that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
| 17:22And
| 17:22the glory which thou gavest me I have given them;
| 17:22that they may be one,
| 17:22even as we are one:
| 17:23I in them,
| 17:23and
| 17:23thou in me,
| 17:23that they may be made perfect in one;
| 17:23and
| 17:23that the world may know that thou hast sent me,
| 17:23and
| 17:23hast loved them,
| 17:23as thou hast loved me.
| 17:24Father,
| 17:24I will that they also,
| 17:24whom thou hast given me,
| 17:24be with me where I am;
| 17:24that they may behold my glory,
| 17:24which thou hast given me:
| 17:24for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
| 17:25O righteous Father,
| 17:25the world hath not known thee:
| 17:25but
| 17:25I have known thee,
| 17:25and
| 17:25these have known that thou hast sent me.
| 17:26And
| 17:26I have declared unto them thy name,
| 17:26and
| 17:26will declare it:
| 17:26that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them,
| 17:26and
| 17:26I in them.
Chapter 18
| 18:1When Jesus had spoken these words,
| 18:1he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron,
| 18:1where was a garden,
| 18:1into the which he entered,
| 18:1and
| 18:1his disciples.
| 18:2And
| 18:2Judas also,
| 18:2which betrayed him,
| 18:2knew the place:
| 18:2for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
| 18:3Judas then,
| 18:3having received a band of men
| 18:3and
| 18:3officers from the chief priests
| 18:3and
| 18:3Pharisees,
| 18:3cometh thither with lanterns
| 18:3and
| 18:3torches
| 18:3and
| 18:3weapons.
| 18:4Jesus therefore,
| 18:4knowing all things that should come upon him,
| 18:4went forth,
| 18:4and
| 18:4said unto them,
| 18:4Whom seek ye?
| 18:5They answered him,
| 18:5Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them,
| 18:5I am he. And Judas also,
| 18:5which betrayed him,
| 18:5stood with them.
| 18:6As soon then as he had said unto them,
| 18:6I am he,
| 18:6they went backward,
| 18:6and
| 18:6fell to the ground.
| 18:7Then asked he them again,
| 18:7Whom seek ye? And they said,
| 18:7Jesus of Nazareth.
| 18:8Jesus answered,
| 18:8I have told you that I am he:
| 18:8if therefore ye seek me,
| 18:8let these go their way:
| 18:9That the saying might be fulfilled,
| 18:9which he spake,
| 18:9Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
| 18:10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it,
| 18:10and
| 18:10smote the high priest’s servant,
| 18:10and
| 18:10cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
| 18:11Then said Jesus unto Peter,
| 18:11Put up thy sword into the sheath:
| 18:11the cup which my Father hath given me,
| 18:11shall I not drink it?
| 18:12Then the band
| 18:12and
| 18:12the captain
| 18:12and
| 18:12officers of the Jews took Jesus,
| 18:12and
| 18:12bound him,
| 18:13And
| 18:13led him away to Annas first;
| 18:13for he was father in law to Caiaphas,
| 18:13which was the high priest that same year.
| 18:14Now Caiaphas was he,
| 18:14which gave counsel to the Jews,
| 18:14that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
| 18:15And
| 18:15Simon Peter followed Jesus,
| 18:15and
| 18:15so did another disciple:
| 18:15that disciple was known unto the high priest,
| 18:15and
| 18:15went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
| 18:16But
| 18:16Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple,
| 18:16which was known unto the high priest,
| 18:16and
| 18:16spake unto her that kept the door,
| 18:16and
| 18:16brought in Peter.
| 18:17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter,
| 18:17Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith,
| 18:17I am not.
| 18:18And
| 18:18the servants
| 18:18and
| 18:18officers stood there,
| 18:18who had made a fire of coals;
| 18:18for it was cold:
| 18:18and
| 18:18they warmed themselves:
| 18:18and
| 18:18Peter stood with them,
| 18:18and
| 18:18warmed himself.
| 18:19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples,
| 18:19and
| 18:19of his doctrine.
| 18:20Jesus answered him,
| 18:20I spake openly to the world;
| 18:20I ever taught in the synagogue,
| 18:20and
| 18:20in the temple,
| 18:20whither the Jews always resort;
| 18:20and
| 18:20in secret have I said nothing.
| 18:21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me,
| 18:21what I have said unto them:
| 18:21behold,
| 18:21they know what I said.
| 18:22And
| 18:22when he had thus spoken,
| 18:22one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand,
| 18:22saying,
| 18:22Answerest thou the high priest so?
| 18:23Jesus answered him,
| 18:23If I have spoken evil,
| 18:23bear witness of the evil:
| 18:23but
| 18:23if well,
| 18:23why smitest thou me?
| 18:24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
| 18:25And
| 18:25Simon Peter stood
| 18:25and
| 18:25warmed himself. They said therefore unto him,
| 18:25Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it,
| 18:25and
| 18:25said,
| 18:25I am not.
| 18:26One of the servants of the high priest,
| 18:26being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off,
| 18:26saith,
| 18:26Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
| 18:27Peter then denied again:
| 18:27and
| 18:27immediately the cock crew.
| 18:28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment:
| 18:28and
| 18:28it was early;
| 18:28and
| 18:28they themselves went not into the judgment hall,
| 18:28lest they should be defiled;
| 18:28but
| 18:28that they might eat the passover.
| 18:29Pilate then went out unto them,
| 18:29and
| 18:29said,
| 18:29What accusation bring ye against this man?
| 18:30They answered
| 18:30and
| 18:30said unto him,
| 18:30If he were not a malefactor,
| 18:30we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
| 18:31Then said Pilate unto them,
| 18:31Take ye him,
| 18:31and
| 18:31judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him,
| 18:31It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
| 18:32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled,
| 18:32which he spake,
| 18:32signifying what death he should die.
| 18:33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again,
| 18:33and
| 18:33called Jesus,
| 18:33and
| 18:33said unto him,
| 18:33Art thou the King of the Jews?
| 18:34Jesus answered him,
| 18:34Sayest thou this thing of thyself,
| 18:34or
| 18:34did others tell it thee of me?
| 18:35Pilate answered,
| 18:35Am I a Jew? Thine own nation
| 18:35and
| 18:35the chief priests have delivered thee unto me:
| 18:35what hast thou done?
| 18:36Jesus answered,
| 18:36My kingdom is not of this world:
| 18:36if my kingdom were of this world,
| 18:36then would my servants fight,
| 18:36that I should not be delivered to the Jews:
| 18:36but
| 18:36now is my kingdom not from hence.
| 18:37Pilate therefore said unto him,
| 18:37Art thou a king then? Jesus answered,
| 18:37Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born,
| 18:37and
| 18:37for this cause came I into the world,
| 18:37that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
| 18:38Pilate saith unto him,
| 18:38What is truth? And when he had said this,
| 18:38he went out again unto the Jews,
| 18:38and
| 18:38saith unto them,
| 18:38I find in him no fault at all.
| 18:39But
| 18:39ye have a custom,
| 18:39that I should release unto you one at the passover:
| 18:39will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
| 18:40Then cried they all again,
| 18:40saying,
| 18:40Not this man,
| 18:40but
| 18:40Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
Chapter 19
| 19:1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus,
| 19:1and
| 19:1scourged him.
| 19:2And
| 19:2the soldiers platted a crown of thorns,
| 19:2and
| 19:2put it on his head,
| 19:2and
| 19:2they put on him a purple robe,
| 19:3And
| 19:3said,
| 19:3Hail,
| 19:3King of the Jews!
| 19:3and
| 19:3they smote him with their hands.
| 19:4Pilate therefore went forth again,
| 19:4and
| 19:4saith unto them,
| 19:4Behold,
| 19:4I bring him forth to you,
| 19:4that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
| 19:5Then came Jesus forth,
| 19:5wearing the crown of thorns,
| 19:5and
| 19:5the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them,
| 19:5Behold the man!
| 19:6When the chief priests therefore
| 19:6and
| 19:6officers saw him,
| 19:6they cried out,
| 19:6saying,
| 19:6Crucify him,
| 19:6crucify him. Pilate saith unto them,
| 19:6Take ye him,
| 19:6and
| 19:6crucify him:
| 19:6for I find no fault in him.
| 19:7The Jews answered him,
| 19:7We have a law,
| 19:7and
| 19:7by our law he ought to die,
| 19:7because he made himself the Son of God.
| 19:8When Pilate therefore heard that saying,
| 19:8he was the more afraid;
| 19:9And
| 19:9went again into the judgment hall,
| 19:9and
| 19:9saith unto Jesus,
| 19:9Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
| 19:10Then saith Pilate unto him,
| 19:10Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee,
| 19:10and
| 19:10have power to release thee?
| 19:11Jesus answered,
| 19:11Thou couldest have no power at all against me,
| 19:11except it were given thee from above:
| 19:11therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
| 19:12And
| 19:12from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him:
| 19:12but
| 19:12the Jews cried out,
| 19:12saying,
| 19:12If thou let this man go,
| 19:12thou art not Caesar’s friend:
| 19:12whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
| 19:13When Pilate therefore heard that saying,
| 19:13he brought Jesus forth,
| 19:13and
| 19:13sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement,
| 19:13but
| 19:13in the Hebrew,
| 19:13Gabbatha.
| 19:14And
| 19:14it was the preparation of the passover,
| 19:14and
| 19:14about the sixth hour:
| 19:14and
| 19:14he saith unto the Jews,
| 19:14Behold your King!
| 19:15But
| 19:15they cried out,
| 19:15Away with him,
| 19:15away with him,
| 19:15crucify him. Pilate saith unto them,
| 19:15Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered,
| 19:15We have no king
| 19:15but
| 19:15Caesar.
| 19:16Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus,
| 19:16and
| 19:16led him away.
| 19:17And
| 19:17he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull,
| 19:17which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
| 19:18Where they crucified him,
| 19:18and
| 19:18two other with him,
| 19:18on either side one,
| 19:18and
| 19:18Jesus in the midst.
| 19:19And
| 19:19Pilate wrote a title,
| 19:19and
| 19:19put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
| 19:20This title then read many of the Jews:
| 19:20for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city:
| 19:20and
| 19:20it was written in Hebrew,
| 19:20and
| 19:20Greek,
| 19:20and
| 19:20Latin.
| 19:21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate,
| 19:21Write not,
| 19:21The King of the Jews;
| 19:21but
| 19:21that he said,
| 19:21I am King of the Jews.
| 19:22Pilate answered,
| 19:22What I have written I have written.
| 19:23Then the soldiers,
| 19:23when they had crucified Jesus,
| 19:23took his garments,
| 19:23and
| 19:23made four parts,
| 19:23to every soldier a part;
| 19:23and
| 19:23also his coat:
| 19:23now the coat was without seam,
| 19:23woven from the top throughout.
| 19:24They said therefore among themselves,
| 19:24Let us not rend it,
| 19:24but
| 19:24cast lots for it,
| 19:24whose it shall be:
| 19:24that the scripture might be fulfilled,
| 19:24which saith,
| 19:24They parted my raiment among them,
| 19:24and
| 19:24for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
| 19:25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother,
| 19:25and
| 19:25his mother’s sister,
| 19:25Mary the wife of Cleophas,
| 19:25and
| 19:25Mary Magdalene.
| 19:26When Jesus therefore saw his mother,
| 19:26and
| 19:26the disciple standing by,
| 19:26whom he loved,
| 19:26he saith unto his mother,
| 19:26Woman,
| 19:26behold thy son!
| 19:27Then saith he to the disciple,
| 19:27Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
| 19:28After this,
| 19:28Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,
| 19:28that the scripture might be fulfilled,
| 19:28saith,
| 19:28I thirst.
| 19:29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar:
| 19:29and
| 19:29they filled a spunge with vinegar,
| 19:29and
| 19:29put it upon hyssop,
| 19:29and
| 19:29put it to his mouth.
| 19:30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
| 19:30he said,
| 19:30It is finished:
| 19:30and
| 19:30he bowed his head,
| 19:30and
| 19:30gave up the ghost.
| 19:31The Jews therefore,
| 19:31because it was the preparation,
| 19:31that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day,
| 19:31(for that sabbath day was an high day,
| 19:31) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken,
| 19:31and
| 19:31that they might be taken away.
| 19:32Then came the soldiers,
| 19:32and
| 19:32brake the legs of the first,
| 19:32and
| 19:32of the other which was crucified with him.
| 19:33But
| 19:33when they came to Jesus,
| 19:33and
| 19:33saw that he was dead already,
| 19:33they brake not his legs:
| 19:34But
| 19:34one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side,
| 19:34and
| 19:34forthwith came there out blood
| 19:34and
| 19:34water.
| 19:35And
| 19:35he that saw it bare record,
| 19:35and
| 19:35his record is true:
| 19:35and
| 19:35he knoweth that he saith true,
| 19:35that ye might believe.
| 19:36For these things were done,
| 19:36that the scripture should be fulfilled,
| 19:36A bone of him shall not be broken.
| 19:37And
| 19:37again another scripture saith,
| 19:37They shall look on him whom they pierced.
| 19:38And
| 19:38after this Joseph of Arimathaea,
| 19:38being a disciple of Jesus,
| 19:38but
| 19:38secretly for fear of the Jews,
| 19:38besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus:
| 19:38and
| 19:38Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore,
| 19:38and
| 19:38took the body of Jesus.
| 19:39And
| 19:39there came also Nicodemus,
| 19:39which at the first came to Jesus by night,
| 19:39and
| 19:39brought a mixture of myrrh
| 19:39and
| 19:39aloes,
| 19:39about an hundred pound weight.
| 19:40Then took they the body of Jesus,
| 19:40and
| 19:40wound it in linen clothes with the spices,
| 19:40as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
| 19:41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden;
| 19:41and
| 19:41in the garden a new sepulchre,
| 19:41wherein was never man yet laid.
| 19:42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day;
| 19:42for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
Chapter 20
| 20:1The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early,
| 20:1when it was yet dark,
| 20:1unto the sepulchre,
| 20:1and
| 20:1seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
| 20:2Then she runneth,
| 20:2and
| 20:2cometh to Simon Peter,
| 20:2and
| 20:2to the other disciple,
| 20:2whom Jesus loved,
| 20:2and
| 20:2saith unto them,
| 20:2They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre,
| 20:2and
| 20:2we know not where they have laid him.
| 20:3Peter therefore went forth,
| 20:3and
| 20:3that other disciple,
| 20:3and
| 20:3came to the sepulchre.
| 20:4So they ran both together:
| 20:4and
| 20:4the other disciple did outrun Peter,
| 20:4and
| 20:4came first to the sepulchre.
| 20:5And
| 20:5he stooping down,
| 20:5and
| 20:5looking in,
| 20:5saw the linen clothes lying;
| 20:5yet went he not in.
| 20:6Then cometh Simon Peter following him,
| 20:6and
| 20:6went into the sepulchre,
| 20:6and
| 20:6seeth the linen clothes lie,
| 20:7And
| 20:7the napkin,
| 20:7that was about his head,
| 20:7not lying with the linen clothes,
| 20:7but
| 20:7wrapped together in a place by itself.
| 20:8Then went in also that other disciple,
| 20:8which came first to the sepulchre,
| 20:8and
| 20:8he saw,
| 20:8and
| 20:8believed.
| 20:9For as yet they knew not the scripture,
| 20:9that he must rise again from the dead.
| 20:10Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
| 20:11But
| 20:11Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping:
| 20:11and
| 20:11as she wept,
| 20:11she stooped down,
| 20:11and
| 20:11looked into the sepulchre,
| 20:12And
| 20:12seeth two angels in white sitting,
| 20:12the one at the head,
| 20:12and
| 20:12the other at the feet,
| 20:12where the body of Jesus had lain.
| 20:13And
| 20:13they say unto her,
| 20:13Woman,
| 20:13why weepest thou? She saith unto them,
| 20:13Because they have taken away my LORD,
| 20:13and
| 20:13I know not where they have laid him.
| 20:14And
| 20:14when she had thus said,
| 20:14she turned herself back,
| 20:14and
| 20:14saw Jesus standing,
| 20:14and
| 20:14knew not that it was Jesus.
| 20:15Jesus saith unto her,
| 20:15Woman,
| 20:15why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She,
| 20:15supposing him to be the gardener,
| 20:15saith unto him,
| 20:15Sir,
| 20:15if thou have borne him hence,
| 20:15tell me where thou hast laid him,
| 20:15and
| 20:15I will take him away.
| 20:16Jesus saith unto her,
| 20:16Mary. She turned herself,
| 20:16and
| 20:16saith unto him,
| 20:16Rabboni;
| 20:16which is to say,
| 20:16Master.
| 20:17Jesus saith unto her,
| 20:17Touch me not;
| 20:17for I am not yet ascended to my Father:
| 20:17but
| 20:17go to my brethren,
| 20:17and
| 20:17say unto them,
| 20:17I ascend unto my Father,
| 20:17and
| 20:17your Father;
| 20:17and
| 20:17to my God,
| 20:17and
| 20:17your God.
| 20:18Mary Magdalene came
| 20:18and
| 20:18told the disciples that she had seen the LORD,
| 20:18and
| 20:18that he had spoken these things unto her.
| 20:19Then the same day at evening,
| 20:19being the first day of the week,
| 20:19when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews,
| 20:19came Jesus
| 20:19and
| 20:19stood in the midst,
| 20:19and
| 20:19saith unto them,
| 20:19Peace be unto you.
| 20:20And
| 20:20when he had so said,
| 20:20he shewed unto them his hands
| 20:20and
| 20:20his side. Then were the disciples glad,
| 20:20when they saw the LORD.
| 20:21Then said Jesus to them again,
| 20:21Peace be unto you:
| 20:21as my Father hath sent me,
| 20:21even so send I you.
| 20:22And
| 20:22when he had said this,
| 20:22he breathed on them,
| 20:22and
| 20:22saith unto them,
| 20:22Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
| 20:23Whose soever sins ye remit,
| 20:23they are remitted unto them;
| 20:23and
| 20:23whose soever sins ye retain,
| 20:23they are retained.
| 20:24But
| 20:24Thomas,
| 20:24one of the twelve,
| 20:24called Didymus,
| 20:24was not with them when Jesus came.
| 20:25The other disciples therefore said unto him,
| 20:25We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them,
| 20:25Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails,
| 20:25and
| 20:25put my finger into the print of the nails,
| 20:25and
| 20:25thrust my hand into his side,
| 20:25I will not believe.
| 20:26And
| 20:26after eight days again his disciples were within,
| 20:26and
| 20:26Thomas with them:
| 20:26then came Jesus,
| 20:26the doors being shut,
| 20:26and
| 20:26stood in the midst,
| 20:26and
| 20:26said,
| 20:26Peace be unto you.
| 20:27Then saith he to Thomas,
| 20:27Reach hither thy finger,
| 20:27and
| 20:27behold my hands;
| 20:27and
| 20:27reach hither thy hand,
| 20:27and
| 20:27thrust it into my side:
| 20:27and
| 20:27be not faithless,
| 20:27but
| 20:27believing.
| 20:28And
| 20:28Thomas answered
| 20:28and
| 20:28said unto him,
| 20:28My LORD
| 20:28and
| 20:28my God.
| 20:29Jesus saith unto him,
| 20:29Thomas,
| 20:29because thou hast seen me,
| 20:29thou hast believed:
| 20:29blessed are they that have not seen,
| 20:29and
| 20:29yet have believed.
| 20:30And
| 20:30many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,
| 20:30which are not written in this book:
| 20:31But
| 20:31these are written,
| 20:31that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,
| 20:31the Son of God;
| 20:31and
| 20:31that believing ye might have life through his name.
Chapter 21
| 21:1After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias;
| 21:1and
| 21:1on this wise shewed he himself.
| 21:2There were together Simon Peter,
| 21:2and
| 21:2Thomas called Didymus,
| 21:2and
| 21:2Nathanael of Cana in Galilee,
| 21:2and
| 21:2the sons of Zebedee,
| 21:2and
| 21:2two other of his disciples.
| 21:3Simon Peter saith unto them,
| 21:3I go a fishing. They say unto him,
| 21:3We also go with thee. They went forth,
| 21:3and
| 21:3entered into a ship immediately;
| 21:3and
| 21:3that night they caught nothing.
| 21:4But
| 21:4when the morning was now come,
| 21:4Jesus stood on the shore:
| 21:4but
| 21:4the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
| 21:5Then Jesus saith unto them,
| 21:5Children,
| 21:5have ye any meat? They answered him,
| 21:5No.
| 21:6And
| 21:6he said unto them,
| 21:6Cast the net on the right side of the ship,
| 21:6and
| 21:6ye shall find. They cast therefore,
| 21:6and
| 21:6now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
| 21:7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter,
| 21:7It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,
| 21:7he girt his fisher’s coat unto him,
| 21:7(for he was naked,
| 21:7)
| 21:7and
| 21:7did cast himself into the sea.
| 21:8And
| 21:8the other disciples came in a little ship;
| 21:8(for they were not far from land,
| 21:8but
| 21:8as it were two hundred cubits,
| 21:8) dragging the net with fishes.
| 21:9As soon then as they were come to land,
| 21:9they saw a fire of coals there,
| 21:9and
| 21:9fish laid thereon,
| 21:9and
| 21:9bread.
| 21:10Jesus saith unto them,
| 21:10Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
| 21:11Simon Peter went up,
| 21:11and
| 21:11drew the net to land full of great fishes,
| 21:11an hundred
| 21:11and
| 21:11fifty
| 21:11and
| 21:11three:
| 21:11and
| 21:11for all there were so many,
| 21:11yet was not the net broken.
| 21:12Jesus saith unto them,
| 21:12Come
| 21:12and
| 21:12dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him,
| 21:12Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
| 21:13Jesus then cometh,
| 21:13and
| 21:13taketh bread,
| 21:13and
| 21:13giveth them,
| 21:13and
| 21:13fish likewise.
| 21:14This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples,
| 21:14after that he was risen from the dead.
| 21:15So when they had dined,
| 21:15Jesus saith to Simon Peter,
| 21:15Simon,
| 21:15son of Jonas,
| 21:15lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him,
| 21:15Yea,
| 21:15Lord;
| 21:15thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him,
| 21:15Feed my lambs.
| 21:16He saith to him again the second time,
| 21:16Simon,
| 21:16son of Jonas,
| 21:16lovest thou me? He saith unto him,
| 21:16Yea,
| 21:16Lord;
| 21:16thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him,
| 21:16Feed my sheep.
| 21:17He saith unto him the third time,
| 21:17Simon,
| 21:17son of Jonas,
| 21:17lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time,
| 21:17Lovest thou me? And he said unto him,
| 21:17Lord,
| 21:17thou knowest all things;
| 21:17thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him,
| 21:17Feed my sheep.
| 21:18Verily,
| 21:18verily,
| 21:18I say unto thee,
| 21:18When thou wast young,
| 21:18thou girdest thyself,
| 21:18and
| 21:18walkedst whither thou wouldest:
| 21:18but
| 21:18when thou shalt be old,
| 21:18thou shalt stretch forth thy hands,
| 21:18and
| 21:18another shall gird thee,
| 21:18and
| 21:18carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
| 21:19This spake he,
| 21:19signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this,
| 21:19he saith unto him,
| 21:19Follow me.
| 21:20Then Peter,
| 21:20turning about,
| 21:20seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following;
| 21:20which also leaned on his breast at supper,
| 21:20and
| 21:20said,
| 21:20Lord,
| 21:20which is he that betrayeth thee?
| 21:21Peter seeing him saith to Jesus,
| 21:21Lord,
| 21:21and
| 21:21what shall this man do?
| 21:22Jesus saith unto him,
| 21:22If I will that he tarry till I come,
| 21:22what is that to thee? follow thou me.
| 21:23Then went this saying abroad among the brethren,
| 21:23that that disciple should not die:
| 21:23yet Jesus said not unto him,
| 21:23He shall not die;
| 21:23but
| 21:23,
| 21:23If I will that he tarry till I come,
| 21:23what is that to thee?
| 21:24This is the disciple which testifieth of these things,
| 21:24and
| 21:24wrote these things:
| 21:24and
| 21:24we know that his testimony is true.
| 21:25And
| 21:25there are also many other things which Jesus did,
| 21:25the which,
| 21:25if they should be written every one,
| 21:25I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
